5 Reasons Why You Should Never Join More Than One MLM Opportunity

If you have had success with an MLM (multi-level-marketing) opportunity then you have probably considered joining another one.

If one MLM marketing opportunity is good, then two will be even better, right?

This is not necessarily the case, as starting a second or even third MLM job could actually be worse in the long run. Before I go on with my post.

I want to be clear that this is has nothing to do with being part of a primary MLM opportunity and having some type of front-end system on the front end as a tool.

I do believe that if used right together, you can build a successful MLM business.

Here are five reasons why you should never join more than one MLM product based opportunity at the same time:

1. It makes you look unsuccessful

If one of your prospects knows that you are involved in three or four MLM businesses then they will probably be curious as to why.

After all, if you were successful, why would you need to be involved in so many opportunities?

Being involved in too many MLM businesses could give the appearance that you are not very good at it, or that you are incapable of generating revenue with just one opportunity. In other words, it makes you look like a flake that cannot be trusted.

2. It divides your passion and time

Running a successful MLM business takes a lot of passion and time.

If yours is divided over three or four businesses then how can you expect to dedicate the time and passion it takes for each one to be a success?

The more likely scenario is that you do not have the time or passion to give to each business, which will probably cause them all to fail.


3. You could lose prospects by sending mixed signals

If you have a potential prospect that is interested in an opportunity and you try to push them into something else, you could lose them.

When running multiple MLM businesses it is very difficult not to have a favorite, but perhaps your favorite does not appeal to one of your prospects.

You will be sending mixed signals that could cause you to lose prospects.

4. Your downline will do the same to you

If you are working at three different companies then what is to stop your downline from doing the same?

You want people in your downline that are motivated and focused on your business, but you can hardly blame them for seeking out multiple opportunities if you are doing the same thing.

By showing dedication to one business your downline will see that you are loyal and will, in turn, show more loyalty to you.

5. You will appear disloyal to your upline

Just as you can send the wrong message to your downline, you can also send the wrong message to your upline.

The people “above” you in your MLM business will probably not be too happy when they find out that you are dividing your time and focus between multiple opportunities.

In order for your upline to know you are loyal, you need to concentrate on one opportunity.

In closing…

Joining more than one MLM opportunity at the same time is simply a bad idea. It will not only divide your time and passion but could send the wrong message to your downline, prospects and upline.

  2. This makes zero sense Nate. I am stunned by program hoppers, and even more stunned by people working multiple MLMs at once. This is like getting a job at Microsoft, then a job at Apple, working 2 long shifts lol! Makes no sense.

    Join 1 opp. Work it. Succeed.

    Hi Nate! Great post. I teach the same principle. It’s the “shiny ball syndrome” A person shouldn’t jump from opportunity to opportunity because the one they are currently in isn’t doing what they expected.

    However, there are exceptions to every rule.

    For instance, when you have an existing successful mlm business and find another mlm that enhances the one you are already in. You aren’t jumping ship to chase after something else, you are just making more money!!! Plus, if a person has done their job correctly as a team leader for their downline, then when a leader suggests that his/her members follow suit because of the monetary benefits involved, then the whole team will also make money. 🙂 This principle works every single time. It’s what builds true mlm businesses!

      Exactly, the good ol’ shiny object syndrome, as we all like to call it. Most people to jump into an opportunity see all of the glory of the people on stage making money. But they don’t know that it was a process and that even though it may look like an overnight success, it’s far from it.

    I think it’s my first time here.

    I’m not in MLM anymore, but I thought I’ll still pay you a visit, since you came see me 🙂

    I don’t think I know of internet marketers that are in more than one MLM, but your points make total sense.

    If I joined someone who is in several MLM companies, I would feel that their focus would be divided, and that it’s more like a factory type business than a real business. It would most definitely take away my trust.

      Actually the Internet Marketers that you speak of are in multiple Internet Marketing affiliate programs. A little different than the traditional physical product based MLM.

      Yes, the focus would be divided and not only that, who would the ideal customer? Would be tough to do.

  12. Joining more than one MLM business opportunity has so many negatives.

    One thing for sure is you may get fired as a distributor from your MLM companies as this is usually a violation of the company policies.

    This is a definite way to lose whatever foundation or income you have established with the company. Most companies have to protect not only themselves, but their distributors in case of people who decide to cross-recruit or get their downlines to join other MLM companies.

    It just isn’t ethical.

    Joining more than one MLM opportunity also makes you look like all you want is to make a quick buck out of someone. I remember meeting a person many years back, and he was promoting something new to me every single week.

    He lost my trust the moment I realized what he was trying to do.

    One other issue is really, what do you promote? With so many opportunities, how do you decide which opportunity should you promote?

    I find it amazing that people can join so many opportunities, or affiliate programs that promote stuff that are along the same line and try to promote all of them.

    It just makes you lose credibility in the long run.

      You nailed it. I’m glad you and I can see eye to eye on this topic. I do believe that if you pick a tool that has a back-end compensation plan attached to it, that it’s ok to promote because of the fact that if your prospect isn’t interested in your opportunity, you can assist them and ask them if there is anything you can do to help them with their current business if they have one. Now, with this being said, you will see Network Marketers out there that will be in one MLM, and then they go out to promote dozens of other affiliate programs. I met a guy from Europe a few years ago at a Network Marketing event and he told me that he was promoting 30 different MLM’s. I couldn’t believe it. The only thing, I would be concern with is being able to focus and which direction do you take your prospect. Do you pitch them on vitamins, dietary supplements, skin care or healthy coffee? Lol.   13. Great post, Nate! You are so right about divided loyalties in the world of network marketing. I am reminded of the infamous Letter that was written a few years ago by someone who is highly regarded whose name shall be kept anonymous (but if you’ve been around the Internet long enough, you probably know which one I am talking about).

    The basic idea was that the real future is going from company to company to build an income. Well, if you do that, doesn’t that just mean that people are going to follow the first person and never actually build their own business? This is downright dishonest and unethical. We should be better than that, and it is great that more people are opposing this mentality!

      Having been in the industry for over a decade, I’ve seen my fair share of people who jump from one opportunity, to the next, to the next. Definitely does take a hit on their reputation. The bottom line is that most people who find an opportunity should just stick with it. Things you hear such as “ground floor opportunity, “I’m working with the top leader in the company”, will not make you become successful and people make up reasons to drop one opportunity and go to the next. Ultimately, it goes back to them, they are responsible for their own success. Thank you for the comments and feel free to stop by in the future! 🙂

    On reason #5. Not only your up line, what about those friendship you built with people (in same opportunity) who are not part of your team? They will start avoiding you.

    If you stick with one opportunity, you have lots of benefits:
    1) when some of those who left the opportunity decide to came back, you are there to sponsor them.
    2) when they remember to use the product again, most of them will contact you.
    3) you will build trust and more people will join you (people will know you as some who wouldn’t jump around)
    4) your company will respect, trust and support you more, and may even take some recommendations from you.
    5) you will build loyal team members-people with 5, 10, 15, and over 20 years experiences in your opportunity.

    The result?
    SOLID income for you!

    I’ve recently been thinking about joining a second MLM and I just wanted to say thank you for writing these points – now I’ve read your article I’m like – “Of course! How on earth could I really succeed if I diversify my efforts and time!” I thought joining another MLM would lead to more opportunity and money so I could do MLM only rather than only doing it in my spare time. But this has convinced me to stick with one and really work hard at it to achieve my goals – especially as my downlines and upline are all very important to me. Thanks!

    So, I’m really torn! I totally agree, but I have 2 that I love, but I know I need to focus on one. How do I decide? I use both every day and love both my uplines. One is newer and a “hot” market right now, but the other is established and has more products. I don’t know how to choose!
