How To Brand Yourself – Humanizing Your Business- Part 1

There were times when business and the customers were two separate entities, and because of lack of competition, a business cared less about the customers and did what it deemed fit whether it was pertaining to production or marketing. However, competition has changed everything and if there is one thing that successful businesses care about these days is their customer.

These days, businesses want to attract the attention of the customers and the best way of doing so at present is by humanizing the brand. Customers are no more interested in the infrastructure of the buildings a business owns, rather they are interested in the human side of the business, and therefore, it has become imperative for businesses to humanize their brand.

I would like to share a few tips regarding humanizing your bran, however, these tips will take more length than the normal posts, so I’ve decided to break it down into a series of posts. The lines below give the first part of the series of tips on humanizing your brand.

Use your image:

The first thing pertaining to humanizing your brand is to use your personal image or photo to tell the customers about the brains behind the business. In this regard, you can use your photo on your website and let the customers know that you are as human as they are and you are not just a building or an office that keeps on doing things, rather you are a person and you are willing to deal with the customers on a personal level. Therefore, instead of using logos and pictures of your magnificent office or the equipment you have installed, use your personal image or photo on the website to take the humanizing initiative.


The second important thing pertaining to humanizing the business is using a blog. A blog is the mouthpiece of the business, therefore, whatever gets shared on the blog indirectly represents the ideology and thinking of the business. Most businesses make the mistake of using a blog as a means of marketing and do nothing but present the product or services of the business. This approach is wrong and this is definitely not the purpose of the blog.

With a blog, a business shares its stance and thinking about different issues and aspects related to niche as well as to life. Therefore, when a customer comes to the blog of the business, the objective of the customer is to know more about the brand and its ideologies and not what the brand is selling. Ergo, make blogs informative and for the customers, instead of just making them about business.

Social Media:

If you are serious about humanizing your business and you don’t have any social presence, then I am afraid that either you are not serious at all or you don’t have any clue about the humanizing of your business. In the world of today if there is one thing that single handily leads the humanizing arena it is social media. You have to be present on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and every other social media channel to communicate and interact with your customers on a personal level. Thus, when you manage to interact with your customers on a personal level, it means that you have successfully humanized your business.

  3. I agree about inserting your personality into your business. A case in point is an English frozen food company. The owner was featured in a series of TV stories and he’s even brought out his own book. He’s very human and freely admits to his mistakes.

    I’ve been blogging for at least five or six years but I’m just now starting to use my image in a smarter way. Also trying to increase my time on various social media sites. The problem is I’ve only so many hours a day and I’m trying to move a bit faster through the social media sites so that I can get back to adding content, etc. We need to be able to balance it all out to be the most effective.

    I agree! A great mainstream example is how published authors are using social media. William Kent Krueger, one of my favorite mystery authors, posts on Facebook frequently. He includes photos of the bookstores where he is signing books, and photos with readers who are thrilled to meet him in person. I was very excited to post a comment on his Facebook fan page, and he replied! Elizabeth Gilbert also makes great use of Social media (Eat, Pray, Love and The Signature Of All Things). She tweets photos that her readers send her and on Facebook she also posts comments and photos as she travels around the world promoting her latest book. I call it the “Oprah Effect.” Because of the social media sharing they do, we begin to think we know them personally. Hmmm, maybe I will do a blog post about that!

    Humanizing the business is like saying “like attracts like”. Be able to show how human your brand is will open the floodgates to more prospects and customers to your door. It you allow yourself to let people get to know you through blogging, social media, or just through your photos, then this gives you a great start from building a great connection as well as propel your business!
