Our health experts tell us to drink more water yet we get conflicting information on a daily basis. Should we drink water out of the tap, use tap filters, boil our water, or drink bottled water? There is plenty of information available, but it takes time to sift through it to find the gems. One of the major concerns today is that when we drink water from a plastic bottle, we are also drinking in many plastic particles too.
At first, we may feel there is no cause for alarm. After all, aren’t our bodies designed to screen out toxins and expel them in our bodily wastes? Well, to some extent. If you have friends or family who have cancer, kidney failure, or liver failure, you know their bodies failed to adequately screen out toxins. Yes, some of it is linked to poor nutrition or genetics, but it can be caused by harmful toxins too.
There is no such thing as good plastics. Plastics take a very long time to decompose. Just take a look at any article that has studied plastics in our landfills. Plastics can take over 100 years to decompose. Yet, our landfills are rapidly filling with plastics, despite the efforts of many to promote recycling.
The topic of plastics harming our bodies is a long one, so we have done the research for you. Here are 3 reasons why you need to stop drinking bottled water right now.
1. Plastic particulate contaminants found in bottled water.
The first initial concern is that your bottled water contains minute plastic particulates or contaminants. Is this something that you want in your body? Sure, the scientists spoon-feed you that a small number of plastics are acceptable. Sure, if you drink bottled water once a month, but many people drink their 5 to 10 cups of water a day in the form of bottled water. That’s a lot of plastic that adds up over time.
And surprisingly, plastics have also been detected in beer, honey, and salt, but whether that’s due to the containers they’re stored in, we’re not entirely certain yet.
Just how does the plastic get into the water? You may think that it should stay on the surface of the plastic bottle. Even though plastic takes a long time to decompose, it can still erode away. Just grab a knife and scratch at the surface of your bottle. See how small particles come away?
Since water is naturally corrosive—it contains natural chemicals and elements—it can erode away at the interior surface of the bottle too.
According to one study, they have found widespread contamination of water in plastic water bottles. 250 bottles of water were randomly purchased. These researchers tested in over nine countries, including the USA, with the same results—plastics were found in 93% of the samples, and were from the major water companies—Nestle, San Pellegrino, Dasani, Evian, Aqua, and Aquafina.
Apparently, all brands tested told the BBC that their bottled water products were produced to the highest standards.
During these studies, scientists used a red dye, called Nile Red, that would bind to the plastic, but not other contaminants in the water, nor the water itself. (4) Even the purchase and delivery of the water was done on video, for full disclosure and honesty in the testing process.
The testing process is relatively simple and easy for the layman to understand. The dye was poured directly into the bottle. This is a technique developed by British scientists to detect plastic in seawater.
There have already been prior tests done to determine that the red dye sticks to the free-floating pieces of the plastic, rather than the plastic enclosure. When viewed under certain wavelengths of light, the plastic will fluoresce.
And not only were these particles not fibers or powders that would more naturally flow through the human digestive tract, but they were plastic fragments. This means they’re more likely to get stuck in your body and not be expelled.
Apparently, only pieces that were larger than 100 microns were counted, meaning that there is more plastic in the water than expected. 100 microns is about the size of a human hair, which is even more troubling.
There were also many more particles counted that were under the size of 100 microns, such as 6.5 microns.
2. Different types of plastics found in bottled water.
During the study cited, not one brand came out unscathed. Not only are there hazards in the plastic bottles themselves, but in the bottle caps and the inserts of the bottle caps, if there are any—such as for contests.
If the above isn’t enough, there is also a high risk of contaminants from the products used to make bottle caps too. These include polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene.
This means that there is a double concern for drinking water from plastic bottles. And there is no distinction in the cited studies on whether the caps or the bottles themselves are mainly to blame.
During the study, it was also found that nylon, polystyrene, polyethylene, polyester, polyethylene terephthalate, azlon, polyacrylates, and copolymers were found in the bottled water. It can be troubling that perhaps even the bottled water manufacturers don’t even know what is in the plastics that are made into bottles.
3. Particulates from the manufacturing process itself.
Have you ever watched videos on how food and liquids are prepared for packaging? Most likely you’d never eat or drink anything ever again. Some of the plastic gets into the water during the packaging process too.
Apparently, it’s not just independent studies that have been testing our water, but also the water manufacturers themselves, Besides their response that there is no danger from the number of plastics in water bottles, they have said they’ve been conducting their own tests and have found lesser amounts than the studies have cited.
Some experts say that there is no clear evidence that the plastics in the bottled water come from the manufacturing process (3). One thing is for certain, the plastics weren’t originally in the water because the water that goes into the plastic bottles is strictly filtered after being pumped up from the groundwater.
There are studies of glass water bottles that there have been high amounts of plastics detected too. However, it’s possible that the water tanks that the water has been stored in are also made of plastic, and plastic pipes are used to deliver it to the water tankers. And let’s not forget that even glass bottles have plastic caps.
During the study in question, a small number of particulates were realistically subtracted from the results, due to being in the air.
Closing Thoughts On Never Buying Bottled Water Again
Most scientists safely acknowledge that drinking tap water is far safer than drinking bottled water. Of course, there are options for filtering it.
Be aware of the water you drink. If you’re drinking water from work, it likely comes out of a big water dispenser—that’s made of plastic. Find out where the water is sourced when you’re at the local coffee shop or restaurant. Think up ways that you can do better for your body.
Remember good old glass bottles? Weren’t they called bad for the environment at some point in the past? Even many city garbage services won’t take glass anymore—you have to cart it to a glass recycling depot. How ridiculous is that when glass used to manufacture food products is 100% safe for you?
Yet it’s definitely our fault for decreasing the production of glass containers for plastic containers. Humans have certainly brought this on themselves, but it’s good that we still have options when purchasing products for consumption.
