Why You Should Use Selfies On Social Media To Build Your Business

We live in a world of social media. In addition to being a major part of our lives, the one thing that it encourages the most in us is the taking of pictures. All the social media platforms, whether it is Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, all encourage picture sharing and the use of pictures is a major way of creating the buzz and engagement on all these platforms.

People on social media are now using their smartphones to take pictures and what has now evolved on social media which is called a ‘selfie’. More and more people in general and celebrities, in particular, are using selfies on their profiles as a means of showing their personality. What most of the people don’t know is that selfies can prove to be a vital source in building and promoting your business on social media platforms. This post will provide some useful insight for those of you who aren’t aware of the marketing benefits of selfies.

Why You Should Use Selfies On Social Media To Build Your Business

Branding:

Suppose you are a health and fitness expert and you have accounts on different social media platforms. Can you go on managing the accounts without sharing your personal pictures of the workout? I suppose not, because, people are more interested in what they see compared to what they only listen or read. Therefore, using selfies is actually a way of humanizing your business, and then more selfies can be used to brand it. Although not in the traditional way, selfies can prove to be a vital source in branding the business.

Behind The Scene:

The second major reason why you should use selfies on your social media accounts is the fact that it gives people the behind the scene element, which creates the most buzz. When people show interest in a business, the first thing they do is start inquiring about it with a focus on what really happens behind the curtain. Therefore, when you use a selfie for your social media profiles, you actually satisfy the quest for the curiosity of such people and you will provide them what they want to see.

Promotion Of Other Social Media Profiles:

Generally, what happens when a business has a strong profile of one social media platform, whether it is Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, it generally takes some time for that particular platform to generate any type of buzz for that particular business. Therefore, in order to share that buzz and let the followers of other platforms know the kind of buzz you are creating on other profiles, it is to create a self snapshot ‘selfie’ that did the job on the respective platform. Therefore, selfies taken on one platform can help generate traffic on other platforms as well in a form of leverage.

Promotion Of Products:

Using just the pictures of products for promotion can make it dull and boring for your target audience and it won’t be able to generate any buzz on your social media profiles. On the other hand, if you present the product to your target audience in the form of a selfie where you are carrying the product or putting it to use, then using a selfie can prove to be more lucrative from a promotional perspective compared to simple sharing of pictures of the products.

Giving Face To Business:

Although some social media marketing gurus may disagree with me, however, I believe that using a selfie helps give a face to your business. Aside from your business profile, if your face appears on other platforms, people are instantly able to recognize and identify you because of your selfies. Therefore, if you are the face for your business, then use your selfies to give the face to your business.

Interesting topic. I’ve only recently felt comfortable adding pictures of myself on my blog and business page. I actually feel more connected with my readers now for some reason.

  2. Karen Warren says:

In lots of small businesses the owner is the brand, so it makes perfect sense to include pictures of yourself engaging in your business as part of your social media marketing.

I agree. As business owners we all have to brand ourselves, especially if we are just a one person show. Believe it or not, that can be a huge advantage with your customers. Many folks love to support small businesses.

  3. I’ve actually never thought of that before although in my line I tend to take lots of photos with the product in use which is usually by my toddler. She’s the name behind the brand so I guess that works for us.

  4. Sophie Bowns says:

Apart from my profile image- I don’t like posting too many pictures of myself on my blog!

  5. Michelle says:

I have just started putting pictures of my self on my blog. I realize its important. I just have never liked any pictures that i take.

I think we all tend to be critical of ourselves. Just about everyone I know is critical of their own photos, even if they look great. Maybe it’s just human nature?

  6. Lalia says:

You make an interesting point! I much prefer being behind the camera than in front if it, personally. So I avoid taking photos of myself and go to great lengths to avoid SHARING photos of myself. But you make a very good point, and I will have to reconsider my habits going forward. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this matter!

Great post Nate, I’m not there yet. I’ve been focused on video for the same reason. This is a new area to think about, like most people I’m not to keen on having my picture on social media.

Great advice. I use selfies all the time

  10. This is very interesting and great advice! Thank you for sharing!

  11. I agree that “selfies” are the rage right now and likely will be for a long time. I, personally, haven’t used them BUT I do take pics with my camera instead and use that sometimes. I guess I’m a little behind! 😉

The first time my daughter saw my picture on our website she called me and HOLLERED that I had to take it off. How could I possibly put my picture on the Internet? I explained that it showed people who I really am, that they’re dealing with a real person not a computer, and that the picture was STAYING. I must have been way ahead of the curve, because this was about 9 years ago!! No I don’t have “selfies” (too much chin for my taste, thank you) but you will find lots of pictures of me all over my new website!

    • Chuck Holmes says:

Good for you Tina. People love to see photos of the webmasters. I know I do. It’s nice to put a person’s picture next to their content.

This is an interesting tip about using selfies for to help market. I agree this can be a great way to “humanize your business” and this can resonate well with your target audience. Great post!

Another good advice, Nate! I’m not a fan of selfies but I guess, I’d have to follow your advice from now on. 🙂

  15. Veronica says:

That is an interesting concept. I never thought to use selfies anywhere except maybe on Instagram, but I totally get this

  16. Arleen says:

Now that is something I would have never thought about. I guess I could take a selfie in front of some promotional products or maybe my dog which is the mascot on my website. Not sure about this one, but I do think it will get more interest.

  17. Gina says:

I never thought about this, as I’m not good with taking selfies. You raise interesting points.

  18. Chuck Holmes says:

Great post, Nate. I’ve never even taken a selfie before, as crazy as that might sound. I can see how good selfies with customers, different products, or props could definitely give your business an added boost. One thing I’ve learned on Facebook is that people love pictures. Any update I do with a photo gets the most likes, shares and comments. I appreciate you dropping some wisdom. I’ll send an update to tell you how things go.
    Chuck
