Why Storytelling Is Your Secret Weapon In Social Media

Have you ever wondered that two businesses of the same niche, having the same target audience, deploy the same resources, yet one of them achieves success in social media marketing while others do not? To me, the reason behind this difference is the successful one being able to tell the story in a better way.

Storytelling is one of the best secret weapons you can have when it comes to social media marketing. This storytelling technique is what creates buzz and brings followers and fans to a business. Moreover, no matter how quality content a business shares on its social media profile, if it does not compliment it with a good storytelling technique, all of it is of no avail. There are some key advantages that make storytelling a handsome secret weapon. Let me share with you a few of the main benefits that storytelling brings to social media platforms.

How-to-Brand-Yourself---Humanizing-Your-Business--Part-3

Humanizes The Brand:

When you start telling a story it means that you are coming out and reaching to people. Both of these gestures are exhibited by something that is human. The one thing that the social media users of today don’t want is interacting with a business that has no face, thus, when you start telling the story of your business in the form of images, videos and written commentary upon them, you actually start showing the human side of your brand which that attracts the eye of target audience. Therefore, when you step into storytelling instead of just simple sharing, you actually start humanizing your brand.

Tells About Brand:

You can go on randomly sharing posts in the form of portfolios or sets of images, you can also go on knocking on the door of every target audience member by sending them a message in the inbox to tell them who you are and what your brand is known about, all of which will be ineffective utilization of resources. On the other hand, if you sit down with a creative head and draft a whole set of episodes that are built around telling the story of your brand, then you won’t need to settle for ordinary tactics of telling the story of your brand, rather your brand itself will become a story and people will themselves try to learn and know more about your brand and the way it has become what it is at present.

Takes Shape Of Updates:

You can share as random posts about your brand as possible, but until and unless there is a unity of idea in the posts, the followers won’t stick to it and they will start ignoring the random posts. Therefore, when a brand takes the approach of telling a story on its social media platform, it automatically starts creating updates as the story always has some chronology to it and the events aren’t told at once, rather there is strategy involved, the presence of which results in regular updates for the business profile which keeps the audience engaged and interested.

Becomes Ever Green Content:

The last major element why storytelling is a good weapon for business on social media platforms is the fact that when a content is produced by keeping the story objective in mind, it automatically starts creating content that is evergreen and audience whether new or old can easily view this story and know about the history the brand in an interesting and attention-grabbing manner.

I think you absolutly right! If i would buy anything online and there is 2 store with the same prices I would buy from the one that was most personal and told me about their idea, their personal, show photos and so on. Have a nice evening

  2. Storytelling in an art form. Not only that, but sometimes it works, and other times it seems forced. I’m not selling a brand, but I do try to lead in with personal stories on many of my blog posts. They tend to do best when I’m just writing them instead of trying to find something that will “fit”.

  3. Story telling – wow, what a great approach! I do believe I use exactly that technique but have never looked at it in that way. I try very hard to write for the reader rather than myself. This mean that I take into account how the words I create will be received, how they will come across to the reader. It’s so important to be aware of how your writing is being read by your audience. Thanks for the share, nice one!

    Enjoy the journey.

  4. Nate you are absolutely right. Having a flow to your content and keeping consistent is so important. A story doesn’t have to be complicated it take a few things 1) writing in your own voice. 2) have a plan for your content so it is true to your message and your brand. 3) sharing something of value to your audience.

The catch is not to think that story telling is all about you. It isn’t it is about your readers and what they are interested in. What outcomes they want.

I love the idea of using social media to tell a story. And you are so right that people will respond to the human touch – even the best products will not sell well without it.

  6. There’s an art to telling stories … they draw people in, stories can help people by sharing a ” learning moment” that resonate with them. Stories feed imagination … one time tested activity that’s been around for eons …

Couldn’t agree more Nate. I almost decided to go more “business” with my last night site, in fact I wanted to remove my personal self from it completely but changed my mind. I’m so glad I did because it’s really helped out a lot.

Very good advice that I certainly need. I am always personal in my writing but I don’t always weave a thread between the different topics write about. It’s a work in progress.

  11. Agreed, story telling shoots any business up on social media. I remember i did a work for a from from united state, it’s social media marketing. He actually wanted to market his product on MLM groups, so he asked me to bring up a write up for him and a wrote a short story. when i finished marketing the product he came back and thank me because he had 14k sales in 2 days.

Could you please provide some examples of “good story tellers” that are currently using this strategy with social media?

I’m a visual person… so seeing it helps me better understand what you’re trying to explain here.

Almost every one of our posts involves story-telling in some capacity, even if just in the intro paragraph. If nothing else, it is more fun to write that way!

  19. Hi Nate,

Great post and I agree that writing like you are telling a story works much better, at least for me. I try to write as if I am talking to someone in my living room.

    Have a great day, Monna

  20. Nate,

The first time I hear the word, “Storytelling” in regards to business, marketing, and social networking, some just clicked, because it made sense. Otherwise we’re presenting ourselves in a cold, and indifferent manner. (…no body likes that.)

I try to add that element as much as possible in all my blogs. Thanks for your insightful article,

    Robb

  25. marilyn cada says:

Storytelling shows that the company has a heart and it can also effectively explain the main purpose of the founder behind the company. Storytelling can also be more effective if the founder or the origins of the company started from humble beginnings. The story of Facebook for example

  26. Nate,

I have often observed and been told that it is valuable to tell your story when you teach a webinar, sell a product, or introduce someone to your web site. But I have not thought of creating a story that holds people’s interest through many different social media shares.

I will have to explore setting this up. Thanks.

    Warmly,

    Dr. Erica

I agree, Nate, that humanizing your brand is as important as branding. People are more comfortable dealing with and buying from an internet business when they feel they know the people/person behind the business. I call it “the Oprah Effect.” Even if someone has never met you in person, and probably never will, they believe they know, like and trust you. It sure works for Oprah.

  28. Merle says:

Love it Nate and like everyone else I love reading other peoples stories. Great advice.

  29. Hey Nate,

Storytelling is where it’s at! This is how you’re really going to get the attention of people and your target audience. Why? Because we all can relate to a good story. This allows us to connect to the person or the brand, and if they have a solution at the end, your audience will have a good reason why they will look into it! Great post here Nate! Have a great weekend!

Nate, yesterday I attended a Christian gathering and the Pastor Mr Soberokon told me something that’s going to stay with me he shared a powerful story.

And you know the story was of how his dad having almost giving up as a child who would amount to something good, decided to visit a diviner to see if the child destiny could be predicted as being positive.

    You no what?

When the woman saw this young man, she told the father that your ll amount to nothing.

When the son got home that day he made a decision to become better.

So my not forgetting the message is because of the story
