Why Every Thing Starts With A Why?

Without any doubt, the key differentiator between success and failure, victory and defeat, gain and pain is the mindset of a person. If the mind is set on the right approach, then the most little of efforts result in greater results, whereas having the mindset on the wrong approach results in the greatest of efforts not yielding anything. Therefore, it is important that you have the right approach that focuses on the right things in order to be successful.

There are three interrogative words that represent your approach towards your objective. The lines below discuss these three interrogative words, how ordinary people go about these words and which hierarchy of importance do successful people follow pertaining to these interrogative words.

Everything Starts with a Why

The Three Approaches

There are three ways in the approach of people who conduct business, people who aspire for success and in everything in this life. These three approaches are:

What- This approach deals with what people want to do? What businesses want to offer to their customers? What people wish to achieve in life and so on.

How- This approach deals with how people are going to achieve what they wish to do. Like how people are going to achieve their objective of success? How are businesses going to do differentiate their business from the competitors?

Why- This approach of why deals with what people believe in and what is the purpose behind any undertaking of theirs? For a business, it is the purpose with which they conduct business and for people, it refers to the thing they believe in.

The Ordinary Approach:

The ordinary approach that differentiates successful people from the unsuccessful ones is the way they deal with the interrogatives of the approach. The ordinary approach is that people know about the obvious ones or they think over the obvious one and move to the fuzziest one. In this regard, the obvious one is that people know what they want to do in life, they know how they are going to do it, but what most of the people don’t know and a few don’t bother about is the Why part. People don’t know why they want to be successful, why they want to change a life, why they want to be in a business and so on. Therefore, the ordinary approach is from the simplest to the complex or from outwards to inwards.

Everything Starts with a Why

The Approach of Successful People:

It goes without saying that there is something that successful people do differently than others which makes them successful. Every one of us tries to be successful, however, there are very few who achieve this objective. Pertaining to dealing with interrogatives, successful people move from the complex interrogative of Why to What. Successful people know why they are pursuing a particular objective, they believe in their objective and on the basis of that belief they develop a How and after that, they end up with the What factor. Let us apply this approach to three successful giants, two personalities and one business.

Everyone is familiar with the brand Apple and trusts them blindly in whatever products they launch especially computers. Apple is known for its innovation. As far as the approach that differentiates Apple from other competitors is concerned, Apple starts its marketing with a Why and ends it on What they have to offer for the customers. Their purpose is to build user-friendly computers, they do it by incorporating simplicity in them, and thus they offer simple, easy to use and great computers to the customers. Hence, this approach is what differentiates them from competitors.

Martin Luther King is another person who thought from the complex to the simplest. He knew what he believed in pertaining to civil rights, he knew what his purpose from all the campaign was. To spread his belief he shared it with people, and ultimately he received following from all those who believed in what he believed. Therefore, he told people about his Why and people related to it.

Wright brothers are another example of successful people who have a purpose and who believe in their cause. Despite all the odds, wright brothers believed that man could fly and without any assistance from the world and support of very few dedicated people they materialized their belief and presented a new future to the world.

Hence, if you wish to be successful and want to pursue anything in life, then all you need is a clear Why. The more clear you are on your Why and the more you believe in it, the more spirit will you get to thrive through the greatest of obstacles and make your way through to success.

Now it’s Your Turn!

The why factor is of course a great factor to success. It is very compelling.

We do what we do Nate based on WHY we want to do it. Always, always the driver, no matter what we do. What great points here. Love the Apple note too 😉 Thanks!

I am a teacher and I have a classroom of 5 year olds; I couldn’t help but think of their ability to wonder and question everything. So much of my day is spent helping them find the answers to their countless “why” questions. Not exactly what you were talking about but similar! Thanks for sharing.

Another thought provoking piece! As I sit here thinking about the why in many parts of my life, this gives clarity to the how things need to be accomplished. Thank you!

Totally agree Nate. Our “why” is the reason and our motivation in life. I feel bad for those who do not have a strong enough “why” and are stuck doing things they don’t enjoy to do or are not seeing the results they expect to see. totally enjoy reading your posts. You always get me thinking..

  6. Hi Nate,

A very thought provoking post. I had to read it a couple of times to really get the message. I am guessing this is because for a long time I could not say “why” I wanted to work online, just that I did.

Things are changing in 2014. Have a great New Year.

Sometimes “just” living life can answer questions we so not know to ask. I think sometimes asking questions can be a good thing, as long as we don’t feel badly if we feel we can’t answer the question, and it doesn’t stop us from moving forward any way.

  8. I agree with this, Nate. I thing your “why” is the most important aspect of being successful, whether it be in business, in relationships, or whatever it is. Your “why” is your foundattion, the cornerstone. If your “why” disintegrates, your projects crumbles. Thanks for the insight.

  9. Hi Nate!

I totally agree! Our “why” is the motivational factor that keeps us inspired, alive, and excited about what we are doing. Our “why” is our deep belief that is true to us.

Once we have it, everything follows. People will follow too and those are the ones that will tend to be easier to work with because they share the excitement and the opportunity.

I love that saying “What’s Your Why” because when working with people, that is one of the first things I ask them. Building relationships with clients, I need to know their why so I can help them along the way.

Interesting. Similar to writing copy. Start with the key ideas, figure out the base human emotional response, then create your product.

  12. Fantastic post Nate! Your “WHY” is so important, thank you for sharing your insights!! Love your value!!

  13. Knowing your whys is something my sponsor has been saying to me from the start. I’ve only recently really thought about it and it has changed the way i view my business for the better.

  16. This is an intelligent article because we must accomplish our goal and ignore the naysayers just like the Wright Brothers did!

  18. This is a great post and so true – these words are the answer to success. Thanks for sharing.

  19. Great post Nate,
If we know the” why” ,we do not need the” how” ,it will come 🙂
    Thank you

  20. What does that mean to get “clear” and how do you do that? It comes about by trial and error. Once you’re able to sift out what you want from what you don’t want the “why” becomes easier to grasp. Once you have your “why” it will guide you faithfully.

  21. Luke Blower says:

Great post as usual Nate, indeed successful people are the ones who can break the complex down to the simple.
