What Does Success Have To Do With Forgiveness?

One of the hardest things to do in this world besides facing a heart-breaking situation is finding the courage to forgive. It is one of the greatest and the most difficult attributes granted to humans by God. Usually forgiveness is something associated with God, however, humans also have the capability to forgive. Moreover, the reason why forgiveness is so rare is that it a hard thing to do.

All the discussion regarding why it is so hard to forgive aside, the fact stands that forgiveness is one of the greatest human virtues. As hard it is to forgive, it is equally regarding different aspects and perspectives. In the lines below I shall discuss why promoting the culture of forgiveness in your business is important and how can it help you achieve success.

What Does Success Have To Do With Forgiveness

Lessens The Agony Of Disappointment:

To Err is human. Every business owner faces a situation sooner or later in their business when someone that they are working with makes some type of mistake that was not expected from him or her. When expectations are not met, the result is a disappointment. Therefore, being a disappointed boss is one of the worst moral and ethical situations you will ever be in. From there on, either you can go on and get mad at the person that you’re working with, or you can forgive them. It is a fact that with time even the greatest wounds heal, therefore, it is quite natural that if you forgive someone, with the passage of time the agony of disappointment will decrease, but if you hold a grudge against that person, you’ll never move forward in life. Ergo, to have a light mind in the long run and a grateful workforce (both of which are imperative to success) forgive when disappointed.

Triggers Empathy:

To be a great leader who is loved by all and who the workforce follows towards success, you have to empathize. You cannot possibly know about the limitations and constraints of the people you’re working with if you don’t have the spirit of empathizing with them. When you take the route of forgiving people, forgiveness does not take place instantly; rather, you empathize and then forgive. If you come across a mistake of someone, then you will create a scenario in which the mistake was made, you go into the mind of that person, think what he could have gone through, or what he would go through if you plan to penalize him. All this empathizing opens numerous perspectives in front of you, by doing so, you are not only able to forgive, but identify the reasons behind the mistake, which enable you to take corrective measures later on. Therefore, forgiveness increases your empathizing ability, which then results in a motivated workforce, consequently leading to a successful business.

What Does Success Have To Do With Forgiveness

Increases Dignity:

Being the owner of the business, the way you think about yourself reflects on the whole organization. Therefore, if you feel more dignified about yourself, so will the people and the culture of the organization will also be a dignified one. What forgiving others makes you feel about yourself is dignified. If you notice a mistake by anyone, start by forgiving them, you earn their respect. Hence, if you are forgiving of the small mistakes of the people you work with, ultimately they would forgive each other’s mistake, which will boost a magnificent team spirit among the people you’re working with and will be a good starting base of success in any type of business. Therefore, to increase your dignity and have a dignified workforce, it is imperative that you promote a culture of forgiveness in your business.

  1. Good post, I think forgiven is business is huge. I’ve worked with companies who have a culture of honest is reward, no matter what the issue is. They learn from whatever happens as long as employees are upfront and honest.

Great things often come from errors. Like the Post It Note.

    Hi Nate,

Great post here and forgiveness has to deal with accepting the situation and taking responsibility. If someone within your business makes a mistake then it takes more than one thing that is the cause of the failure. It could be lack of training or understanding or a poor method and is not always one person’s fault.

  3. Hi Nate,

It takes POWER to forgive and let go. I have improved in this department as I show more compassion toward people

Truthfully, mo forgiveness powers moved into overdrive after I was really, really, really sick the past 3 weeks. Prolonged suffering, the likes of which I never experienced in my life, opened my heart even more.

I let things and people go so much more easily because I understand that suffering, hurt people are the ones who create perceived offenses.

    Great share buddy!

Great post, Nate. Forgiveness has always been an important part of my life. I see so many people poisoned by holding grudges in their personal and business lives and it doesn’t help anyone.

  5. Great and surprising post! Since we do have blocks that stop us from getting ahead in business/life/relationships, often forgiving does release those blocks – and often our ego is what stops it! Love your post 🙂

    Hi Nate,

In 2011, a very good friend of mine and who also double as my business partner absconded with about 2 million naira and this is equivalent to approximately 12000 dollars.

I was pained and for the whole of last year till June of this year, I was still nursing the wound without ever thinking of forgiving him. But, I discovered that my life was spiraling downwards, things and business were not moving forward, i was angry unnecessarily towards people. lost focus at work and could not really concentrate.

I was able to forgive him and myself during a programme held in my local church in Lagos, Nigeria and since that time, I felt as if I was loosened from a bondage.

Back to the point of interest, a non-forgiving heart and mind carries burden and it does slows business growth.

Your post, most especially on the aspect of dignity within your staffs and co-workers is highly appreciated.

I will print out this post keep on my desk

Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day.

I love this information Nate, but unfortunatley I don’t forgive people. You know why? Because I don’t pick offences in what people do to me. I already forgive even you don’t apologize.

I believe no man is a saint, we all have our lapses, therefore I tried as much as I can to open my heart to anyone including those who we consider as enemies.
    Great though Nate, keep posting.

  14. You absolutely have to have a spirit of forgiveness in any situation, workspace or at home. Oh, if only all of humanity would understand this. What a far better world it would be. If we could just remember that everyone is simply human, we all make mistakes, and the thing to do is to let go and move on. Just let go. If we can let go of certain expectations we are already ahead of the game. I like your attitude, Nate. Awesome.

  15. This is an excellent article because you have to listen to the other person to discover what he is going through. Ask questions if the situation is appropriate based on what the told you. Even if you are not friends in the end, does not mean that you will never be because there is an old saying.

Don’t burn bridges, because you never know when you will run into this person or that person the next time. You always want to leave people feeling good. Because they will forget what you said and did with them, but they will never forget how you made them feel.

Great post Nate. Just tonight we watched the movie “Into the Wild”. One scene in the film talks about just what you’re talking about here.

Ron Franz: I’m going to miss you when you go.

Christopher McCandless: I will miss you too, but you are wrong if you think that the joy of life comes principally from the joy of human relationships. God’s place is all around us, it is in everything and in anything we can experience. People just need to change the way they look at things.

Ron Franz: Yeah. I am going to take stock of that. You know I am. I want to tell you something. From bits and pieces of what you have told me about your family, your mother and your dad… And I know you have problems with the church too… But there is some kind of bigger thing that we can all appreciate and it sounds to me you don’t mind calling it God. But when you forgive, you love. And when you love, God’s light shines through you.
