7 Ways To Think More Effectively

You are what you think; therefore, whatever you think about yourself and the things around you it actually makes you and the things a reflection of your thoughts. Hence, the purpose of all the branches of philosophy is to help you think in a better way and view things from different perspectives.

We know that our minds are capable of great things because, every now and then, they come out with a brilliant idea or two. However, our minds are also unpredictable, spending large stretches of time idling or distracting themselves.

Among other things, we learn how to grasp fragile and flighty thoughts before they disappear through anxiety and fear; at what times of day to try to work and for how long; how to make use of our boredom and instincts, and how to overcome timid and predictable approaches to the largest problems.

The result is an operating manual to that most wondrous, though intermittent and always baffling, organ: the human mind.

We cannot possibly identify a single undertaking of our lives that does not require thinking or in doing which our cognitive functions do not come into play.

Therefore, it is of grave importance that no matter whichever walk of life you belong to, you must work on making your thinking process better so that the actions you take upon your thoughts are effective and healthy.

Let me share with you a few ways in which you can improve your thinking and make it more effective.

Keep The Negatives At Bay

Although it may seem hard, in the beginning, it is of grave importance that you keep the negative thoughts at bay. For this, you will have to train your mind and in addition to feeding it positive things about yourself and about other people, you will also have to keep the negative thoughts from finding a place in your mind.

Therefore, it is imperative that you identify and remove all kinds of negative thoughts and sentences from your mind, and whenever such a thought comes to your mind, replace it with a counter and positive thought. This way whenever you will think, you will see the bright side of the picture.

Use Powerful Adjectives

When it comes to effective thinking the language which you use in your use during the process has a great impact on your thinking. You may think positively, but that positive thinking in simple language won’t be that effective in shaping your attitude compared to if you think positive in a powerful language using strong adjectives.

Therefore, instead of thinking ‘I can do it’, think ‘No one can do it better than me’.

Focus On The Lesson

I totally agree with you that there are bad or unwanted times when it becomes almost impossible to think straight. I won’t tell you to think totally opposite at that time, however, what I would recommend you is that instead of lamenting on your loss or odds not being in your favor, you must open your mind to the lesson that the unfavorable situation has brought, and believe you me that, there is always a lesson, all you need to do is to think over it.

Think Lesser

This may seem odd to you but thinking lesser compared to excessive thinking is an effective habit. When you think too much you make things confusing, and when things are confusing there is very little to act upon, hence excessive thinking brings stagnation.

Therefore, in order to think effectively which leads to action, you need to think less.

Pause Before You Think

There come times in life when your loved ones offend you or people who you weren’t expecting disappoint or hurt you, at such moments, instead of thinking rashly, you need to pause for a little and then think over the things from the perspective that all this behavior of theirs which you think hurting and offensive might not be so, as they all love you and their heart is free from such actions.

This will keep your relations strong and healthy.

Think Of The Present

Another thing that can make your thinking more effective and productive is when you think of the present and do not indulge in vain thinking of the far future.

Live in the moment and think about things that are present and not worry about things that are going to happen after decades.

Drink Kangen Water

Perhaps the most neglected factor pertaining to effective thinking is providing hydration to the body.

All the thinking takes place in the brain and like all other parts of the body-brain also requires hydration to work properly and better, therefore,  in order to keep your brain thinking at a better level, ensure that you take healthy nutrition that induces brain health and keeps the brain cells alive.

My recommendation in this regard would be to use Kangen water, which I have found that Kangen Water works on the inside of the body at the cellular level helping rid the body of toxic and acidic debris.

We are all born alkaline and we die acidic, so our mission should be to get the acid out of our bodies. Kangen Electrolyzed reduced, Hydrogen-rich, Alkaline water does just that. Let me make myself clear, Kangen water does not diagnose, treat, or cure anything, it simply puts the body back into balance to heal itself the way God intended.

I’ll have to add meditation to the list! The practice of it has helped me tremendously in focusing, as my mind wonders a lot less these days.

      Hi Benson,

Meditation has helped me in so many areas. I usually start upon waking up and it sets the pace and tone for the rest of the day.

  2. My dad always said you can do anything you like until you get caught. As a child that meant I could do the naughty stuff, and I did. Lately I have been thinking that the until you get caught part actually is a script that could have been affecting my thinking and helping me to self sabotage.

Great post as always. I have to agree with Benson Wong. Meditation, breathing exercises, yoga help you stay relaxed and focused. I practice it daily and has helped me a lot.

  4. I totally agree with thoughts influencing everything around you. My two novels in the Moonstone series center around this premise. I even pause when an ambulance or police car roars by outside the window with their siren on full alert to send a positive, helpful message. Thoughts ARE things.

I actually think that I need to stop over thinking things!

Hi Nate, I’ve found lack of sleep can play a role in not thinking so effectively too. It can really make a difference as well as nutrition that you mentioned. I love your point about thinking less, many people overthink and never DO. So go do and stop overthinking 🙂

  7. Think to pause is what I say. So a man thinks so he is. If you think you ate a failure than most likely everything you do will fail. Stuck in your mind. Positive adjectives. This may be a challenge but I up for the race, lets get going. Thanks Nate great post.

  8. Keep the negatives away. That is great advice. I really need to start doing this. I am getting over my husband leaving me for my best friend and I have been down lately. I have been letting the negatives take over and I am not going to do it anymore! Thanks for your great post!

  9. Michelle says:

I love your idea to “tink lesser”! I guess that’s why meditating helps me 🙂

  10. Hey Nate,

Great tips on thinking more effectively! I do have to say that thinker lesser will do the trick for me. Sometimes I get to the point of thinking so much that I tend to complicate things more. It goes with the saying “paralysis by analysis”. Decide what you want to do, and just do it. If it doesn’t work you still have other options! Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend!

    • Nate Leung says:

This also leads to procrastination and sometimes it gets to the point where there’s no coming out of it!

  11. Meredith Yeverino says:

This is the first time I ever considered pausing before I think. Hmmm, that is thought-provoking in of itself. Does this Kangen Water help you write? Is the difference noticeable?

    • Nate Leung says:

It works wonders. I’ve been drinking Kangen Water since 2006. Have a look at it by clicking here.

Great post. Keeping track of our thoughts is sometimes the hardest thing to do. Especially when you are an entrepreneur. There are hundreds of negative possibly thoughts a day and some days it is hard to get out from under them. Having things in your environment to help remind you to look at the brighter side of things helps. Notes on bathroom mirrors, uplifting artwork on the walls, etc can help remind up to take a deep breath and move forward.

To think more effectively, I do keep negative thoughts at bay, relax for a while and start thinking again 🙂

  15. Jeanne Melanson says:

The points I struggle the most with is not thinking negatively, and not over-thinking. Ugh! I’ve always struggled with that, but I’ve noticed it getting easier and easier as time goes on. I’ll master it one day soon. I promise. Thanks, Nate!

  16. Hi Nate,

Great post. I find there are lots of times when I feel like I cannot think straight. Caring for an Alzheimer’s patient is confusing for the caregiver too. We work jigsaw puzzles and do word search puzzles to help her and I work them with her.

It’s never easy, but on the same token, you can always work around it.

  17. This is really amazing, thinking effectively can be a little bit complicated because of negative thoughts.

I loved this article, Nate, because I have the tendency to not give other people as much credit as they deserve when they have hurt my feelings. I immediately jump to the wrong conclusions and am trying to learn to step back and not react right out of the gate. Enagic Kangen water sounds wonderful and especially for the aging boomers, I want more information, please!

Great post Nate – and very thought-provoking. I tend to overthink things. It’s only when I take a step back, breathe deeply or go and do something that will free my mind, that things calm down in this Baby Boomer brain. I keep my vision board in front of me all the time when in the office which tends to ground me and bring me back to my purpose.

This is great! I’ll need to start practicing so I can control my mind into thinking only things that could help me and my growth! My anxiety is really getting worse and I’m afraid it may affect my relationships with others anytime soon. :3 But I’ll keep these in mind and practice!

    • Nate Leung says:

Awesome, Kristine! Every day focus on becoming a better version of yourself. 😊
