Major Personality Traits Exhibited By Great Leaders

It goes without saying that we all have different personalities and each and every one of us has a different approach towards life and different goals and objectives in life. It is the resonation in our personality traits that bring us close to each other and this is the reason why we enjoy the company of a particular group.

Among different personality types, the most important and the one towards which most people aspire is leadership. Successful leaders will tell us one thing and that is that there are particular traits that make a leader, and these traits are present in every leader in one form or another. The lines below give the most general and prominent traits exhibited by successful leaders.

Leadership Traits

Take Chances

The first thing about all the leaders is that they set high goals and to achieve those goals they are willing to take chances. You cannot possibly set a mediocre goal and take a chance for it, rather it’s the setting of an elevated goal and the pursuit of which that differentiate leaders from masses. Therefore, you won’t find a leader who is not willing to take a chance in what he or she believes in.

Enthusiasm

A leader is not responsible for his or her own dedication and commitment to a cause, rather a leader has to lead the masses. Therefore, it is quite natural that the spirit which the leader shares about the cause will reflect in the masses as well. Hence, he is always enthusiastic about the cause and this enthusiasm is with which he or she inspires other people and keeps their spirits lifted so that they stay committed to the cause. Therefore, whoso is not enthusiastic cannot be a leader.

Passion

Whether it’s business or political leaders, the one thing that is abundantly present in them is their passion and love for their work. Leaders emphasize the fact that to be a great leader one has to be loyal to work and understand the fact that it’s the work that matters and achieving excellence in one’s work is what entitles a person for the status and position of a leader. For instance, if a manager does not love the work he does, then he cannot inspire and lead the subordinates to work hard and make the business a success. Therefore, a leader’s love for work should reflect on his actions.

Open To Learning

Further to the trait of being a chance taker, if a leader succeeds in the venture then well and good, otherwise a leader takes the failure as a learning opportunity. A leader never closes the door of learning rather he or she is always open to learning and learning from mistakes is a major part of it. For a leader, failure is the stepping stone to success and a chance to analyze things, learn from them and make improvements. Therefore, a leader is always open to learning and when encountering failure, a leader always welcomes it as a learning opportunity.

Leadership Traits

Face Your Fears

The evident and most obvious reason why leaders are leaders and different from masses is the fact that they have the courage to face their fears. Most leaders agree on this point that leaders don’t run away from their fears, rather they face them, however, they’re facing the fears is different from other people. For other people fear comes in do or die form, leaders anticipate their fear and make their strategy by keeping in mind the worst-case scenario. Therefore, you’ll always find leaders facing their fear and standing in the front line with a big heart ready to take it on.

Now it’s Your Turn!

Great leaders have become a rare breed. What do you think is the reason behind that? What according to you are the traits that differentiate a leader from the masses? Nate I would add “stay calm.” Great leaders are always calm no matter what the situation. Taking chances and face fears is a biggie as well. Many people are not willing to do those 2 things. Enjoy your day and weekend!

      Hi Lisa,

Exactly, leaders always find a way to solve a problem. They never let obstacles get in their way. Taking chances and risks allows all of us to grow and to step outside our comfort zone. And yes, you are right, most are not willing to do those 2 things. Thank you for the comments!

  2. I liked reading this post. It was a reminder that certain traits are common among those who are great. At the same time, you showed that we can all get those personal traits.

    Hi Nate,

Good post here, I think facing fears is a great trait that leaders share as they are usually the ones that will do the things to succeed that the majority is not willing to do.

  4. Each of us has different strong points and passions. When they come together in the right way, that’s when you become a great leader. Thanks for this great post!

    Hi Nate,

    Being enthusiastic is SO important!

The energy becomes infectious….people cannot resist following you if your energy rocks.

Going to meditate now…..to let go, relax…and dip into my unending supply of enthusiasm after my sitting session 😉

    Thanks Nate!

I always try and face my fears when it comes to business.. Great post!

  7. Great list.

I’d add they value the people who follow/work for them. They coach instead of order. They know they are only as good as the people around them.

    They inspire people to follow.

  8. Awesome post here Nate!!! Definately the most important personality traits that are exhibited by the great leaders! Thank you for sharing!!

  9. Judy Garey says:

Great value here Nate! I’d say patience is also one trait that a leader must possess.

  12. Mey says:

Thanks again for another great article Nate.

  13. I think a great leader sticks to their principles and never gives up. I guess it depends on who they want to lead. Take Nelson Mandela. He led the oppressed–the masses.

  14. Oana says:

They are always willing to change. I think that’s the key.I believe that a closed-minded leader won’g go far, but an open-minded leader that is willing to accept change and go with it is half-successful only for this matter.

  15. A great leader is determined, unafraid of what what others might say or think, be energetic and enthusiastic. They must KNOW what they want and stay open to ways of getting it as well as be flexible and recognize that small turns in the road don’t necessarily mean failure. Thanks, Nate.

  16. Here we come again with a spiking bite of truth. Nate, you are just the best…… Passion and taking fear by the neck is a key trait of a great leader. Well i wouldn’t want to forget to mention taking risk, which is the number as for me.Thanks Nate.

  17. Hey Nate,

Nice list of traits that exhibits a leader. I would have to say passion and facing fear are more primary when it comes to a leaders traits.

As you said, if you’re not passion about what you do, you will have a hard time influencing others. With passion comes emotion, and if you put your emotions into what you’re doing, those emotions will carry over to other people whether you’re in sales or managing a team.

As far as fear, I never really thought about the difference between how a leader views fear and how your average joe view fear. I like that you point out that a leader will look at the worse case scenario in order to overcome their fear. Everyone else makes their fear the worse case scenario… Great way to look at it!

    Thanks for sharing these traits!

  18. Hi Nate! Nice to meet you. Great blog post. I love how you organized it so succinctly. It describes me perfectly. Each one of these traits goes hand-in-hand to be a leader. I look forward to future posts from you!

  19. Nate, what a great post. Thanks for sharing. I believe great leaders surround themselves with people that complement their strengths. If leaders hire people better than themselves or those with skills the leader doesn’t have, the better the result. Leaders know how to bring out the best in others, help them believe in themselves in a way that lets the person see their own greatness. Great leaders lead by example, and lead in a way that people will follow them because of *them* not because of title, power, etc… Leaders effectively influence results with and through people; even those outside their span of control. Leaders hold people accountable and provide honest and timely feedback. They are coaches and mentors. I could go on and on. This is one of my favorite topics!
