Internet Marketing Blog: Is SEO Dead?

Do you remember what it’s like not to have a cell phone? If you’ve gotten yourself involved in the online business, chances are you’re old enough to have grown up in the days when smartphones and tablets were things of science fiction. Times change, and recently, they’ve been changing fast. Some things that were popular in the old days no longer have much of a place in today’s world. Take desktop computers, for instance. Once upon a time, they were the only kinds of computers anyone ever had – laptops were simply too expensive for how powerful they were, and no one had them. Now, however, laptops are the norm, and desktop computers are dead.

Is SEO Dead

Dead on the Web

But obsolescence is not just a phenomenon affecting technologies like cell phones and the like – it affects non-physical technology, too. One good example of this is SEO or search engine optimization. The fact that social media networks have become the standard for quality viral advertising and marketing has led some to suggest that SEO is dead. Well, it’s a sensible conclusion to come to, and it’s progressive thinking, but in this case, it’s dead wrong. Let’s take a look at why.

The preeminence of Search Engines

The reason technologies “die” is because they either become irrelevant to our daily lives, or are replaced by faster, more accurate, or just all-round better alternatives. This is easy to see with desktops being replaced by just as powerful, significantly more portable laptops. SEO is still startlingly relevant, though, precisely because we still not only use search engines but rely on them. Just think: Every time most people with smartphones have questions, what do they do? Ask Google, right then and there.

Is SEO Dead

Web Shop Wonderland

When you think about it, the Internet is so successful because it’s a wonderland of webshops. What do we mean by that? Well, that you can find just about any product you could ever want or need, somewhere, for the price you want to pay. Everyone who uses the Internet frequently knows this, and when they use search engines, they expect them to return the best results by default. This is another reason SEO is not dead: People still rely on it and expect it to be active whenever they run a search. At the end of the day, SEO is still one of the most relevant technologies there is because search engines are amongst the most relevant technologies around.

What does this mean for you? A number of things. First, if you decide to start a personal website that hosts a bunch of information or a web-based business or storefront, you can benefit from SEO. In fact, you will benefit from SEO. So keep that in mind, and start something today – your Ferrari is waiting.

Now it’s your turn!

Do you believe that SEO is still relevant to the internet? Why do you feel that people feel that SEO is dead? Please leave your feedback in the comments section and I look forward to reading them!

  1. Hi Nate,

Oh yes…SEO is certainly NOT dead though like you, I keep reading posts where people say that it is.

Perhaps they say this because of the recent Google updates, which didn’t say it was dead, instead, just mentioned different ways of using your SEO strategy. It’s just like the example yuo gave of the computer and laptop – they serve the same purpose but you have different ways of using them.

Yes indeed, SEO does help us to research for a lot of matter in a jiffy and I need a lot of that for my research work too, and as you mentioned, even for shopping you can know a great deal through this way.

I think if you know the right SEO ways, you’d do well, though again, there is nothing for sure that works in the SEO world as it’s forever changing. Yet, you cannot do without it, and it’s certainly going to stay forever. 🙂

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day 🙂

      Hi Harleena!

Yes, with the Google updates, marketers were giving SEO a bad name because of their rankings that went from 1st page SERPs to non-existent. Many marketers were affected by it, but in the end if you want to play on Google’s platform, you need to play by the rules regardless of your personal feelings and opinions towards their updates. Any entrepreneur knows that in order stay on top of their game and want to be successful. As always, thank you for your comments and contribution. 🙂

Bang on Nate…SEO is not dead.

Things may change with all the Google updates, but dead? Nah!

As long as there is Google, there will be SEO.

  5. Adrian says:

I completely agreed. Social media is great and is one of the ways I look to increase my SEO. It would never occur to me to think it is dead…

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hi Adrian,

Yes, social media is a great way to get traffic and have returning visitors. In the end, when you’re getting traffic from social media, it helps with the rankings within Google. Thank you for the comments!

  6. Great points Nate! I believe that SEO is important, but as a blogger, there are other ways to get into the searches rather than the old SEO strategies of years ago. One of them is through syndication of each others posts. You share mine, I share yours. That way the search engines see that people are visiting our blogs and that we might have something to say that people want to search. Happy Thursday Nate!

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hi Stefani,

I agree, there are other methods of getting traffic. Referral traffic is one of my favorite ways of getting traffic. Syndication is an awesome way of getting traffic and you and I know how effective it is. Thanks Stefani! Have a great week ahead!

I believe SEO is alive and well! I notice the difference in exposure when I use it properly, or forget 🙂
The essence of SEO has changed, and Google has done so for the better in my opinion. Their latest updates make it easier/better for people running legitimate business!

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hey Matt,

I agree, SEO has changed for the better. We just have to evolve and adjust to the changes for our benefit. There are still plenty of opportunity for us to rank in Google. Thanks for the comments!

Great article. Yes, I agree that SEO is relevant.Great article. Thank you for putting it together. 🙂

  10. I agree, for the search engines to bring content that is relevant to searches SEO is very alive.
That being said, the changes and increase of Social Media involvement… some coin the term SMO (social media optimization). Social activity such as comments and shares are weighted in the search engines.
Great topic for discussion Nate 🙂

  11. No I don’t think & not agree that SEO is dead! Now there are just few little changes on SERP & due to this people are very disappointed & ther think. SEO is Dead but how can SEO be dead. There is much need & value of SEO

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hey Christina!

Not at all! Changes here and there and value behind SEO. The day that we stop doing searches is the day we stop doing SEO. Appreciate the comments!
