Internet Marketing Tips: How to Use Twitter as an Effective Marketing Platform

If there is a social life of people today, it is virtual. Nowadays, people prefer to socialize with each other on the internet and social media instead of doing it the old fashioned way of visiting someone or having a backyard party. Now the online world is the hangout world for teens and adults, the playground for kids, and the market place for consumers. Therefore, everything in our lives in one way or another is influenced by the online world.

One of the numerous platforms that have made its name in the online world among the users of online social networking platforms is Twitter. It has a massive number of followers and members, which makes it a cave of gold for businesses. All a business needs to know is how to dig the gold.

Today, I’ll be discussing the problem faced by businesses in the effective utilization of twitter for marketing purposes and the three ways of countering the problem.

Effective Utilization Of Twitter As A Marketing Platform

The Problem:

Using Twitter as a marketing tool is challenging for many marketers because many marketers do not know how to properly use Twitter.   It’s safe to say that many of them do not know how to utilize  Twitter as a delivery mechanism to spread a message, and not knowing how to search properly within their target market. Not being able to search the desired niche and the big names within the niche is an issue. People, who don’t know how to search, make the common mistake of following whoever and whatever is available, which raises two types of issues:

  • Following every one might not be reciprocated because those whom you follow might not consider your shared content worthy of being followed. Thus, all you would be doing is only following with no marketing advantage.
  • All this blind following may also raise a red flag to twitter and it can punish you for following too many people without being followed. Therefore, there are chances of account suspension or the account going into blacklist of twitter.
Effective Utilization Of Twitter As A Marketing Platform

Effective Ways of Utilization:

1. The first way of reaching your target audience through twitter is to use the default search option on twitter. All you need to do is to search for names, especially big names in your niche and twitter will give you their account. Then you can follow them and send them a message with a brief introduction of your business and its offerings, so they may follow you as well. Moreover, if you don’t want to follow the big guns directly, then network with those who follow the big guns. One way or another you will reach the audience of your respective niche.

2. The other way of getting a responsive following for your business from twitter is by using the default search option with company names in it. You can type the company name of your niche and you’ll get the company account in the search result. The next thing you need to do is to follow the company and network with people who follow it. They all will be from your niche, thus the chances of the responsive following and the consequent effective marketing increase

3. The third way of finding responsive followers from your niche is by using the #hashtag search option.  The hashtag option basically highlights the content. Therefore, if you wish to search for niche-relevant content, then just put the # symbol before the keyword in the search bar and you will get all the tweets that have used the particular keyword. Thus, you know the people who are tweeting the same information as you intend to do, hence you can easily follow them and increase the chances of the responsive following which will automatically translate into better marketing.

It’s Your Turn!

    Hi Nate,

Thanks for sharing such helpful content. I am in such a difficult situation and I’ve been trying to build my social media presence. I am guilty of the first point mentioned, thinking if I follow multitudes ( though within my niche), that they will also follow me. I was damn wrong and even silviu constant of netmarksuccess cautioned me on the practice.
I will follow your advice and I hope I will get the best out of twitter.

  2. I’ve been on Twitter for a number of years and have been quite pleased with the business I have generated over time. Quality content first is key. If you don’t have quality content built up in your stream (of at least a week for newer users) then anyone you connect with will have nothing to base their choice to follow or not follow.

The tips for finding people you have mentioned here are good ones. However, I have found that engagement is key. If you start to follow market leaders in your industry, share their content! It gets great content into your stream and gets you on the radar for the person that is the market leader. Start a conversation with them! Some may not reply, but many will.

What I always say about social media and connecting with people online is that it’s a numbers game. Like you said, some may not reply, but many will. I agree with you there!

    Hi Nate,
Another really good post. I’ve never taken twitter seriously, and thus never focused on following or building a following. A couple of weeks ago I tweeted one thing and had hundreds of visitors to a site… and my eyes were opened!

    • Nate Leung says:

Haha, that’s awesome Jon! Glad you decided to give it a try! It’s an under utilized tool for marketing in my opinion.

  4. Nate, this post has fantastic info. It answered my biggest Twitter questions. Thank you soooooo much!

  5. Hi Nate,

This post was very informative. I did not know that Twitter would suspend your account or blacklist you. Thanks for that tip. However, I would not get blacklisted from Twitter. I use hashtags to find relevant content, it makes my search so much easier. As for me, I would reach out to my niche market saying. I increased my follower by sharing other people’s content, and a lot of retweets. To date that has been working for me. I have been able to move the conversation with other Twitter Users to other social media platforms without the 140 Character limit.

    • Nate Leung says:

That’s the key right there. Connect on Twitter and then move them over to another platform where you can have an engaging conversation. Awesome stuff Karl!

Great info about twitter. I have been using twitter to share my blog and have gotten a good response from it. I have started following a few also. Have you tried instagram as a way to target an audience?

    • Nate Leung says:

Instagram is one that I am starting to get into. I dived into Pinterest awhile ago and I’m having a blast over there. My next platform is definitely Instagram. Thank you for the comments!

  7. Great info. Twitter is great resource to build your influence & community. To truly build your followers provide relevant timely info and engage with your target market.

On twitter, you are unable to message those that don’t follow you. So the best way to get the attention of the top guns in your industry is to engage with them.

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hi Pamela,

Thank you for sharing that awesome tip. That is an awesome way to get more followers. Thank you!

  16. Hey Nate,

I actually just started using the hashtag although I’ve been on twitter for quite a while now. I can definitely see the benefits on how it can help you target a specific audience of people within your niche. This is probably one of the smartest, if not the smartest things you can do to get the attention of those people that already are interested in what you do! Thanks for sharing!
