How To Stay Motivated In Your Online Business

You’ve watched the videos, attended three meetings, and envisioned your ultimate success many times, yet your efforts haven’t yielded positive results.  Demoralized, you wonder, “Is it time to give up?”

Failure Creep

How to Stay Motivated in Your MLM Business

Each deal that isn’t closed, especially for new marketers, erodes confidence.  The erosion is imperceptible at first, but the effects tend to build over a period of time.  Soon, the expectation of going in becomes one of failure.  You begin to question your sales talent, your persuasiveness, and your ability to be in business for yourself – by yourself.

A marketer without confidence is an oxymoronic construction.  Promotion from a position of uncertainty is a promotion that is destined to fail.  If you cannot convince yourself that the product that you are marketing is something to get excited over, it’s certain that your potential customers won’t be excited either.

Failure creep is pervasive.  You may not notice it at first, but the pessimism that comes with it can overwhelm if left unchecked.

The Source of Motivation

Like every great power of humans that cannot be packaged or bottled or stored away for future use, motivation comes from within.  Sure you can be goaded into doing something, but you’d do it grudgingly and probably not do it as well as you could.  Threats are thought by some to be good motivators, but the fear of punishment or failure is, at best, short-lived, as we learn to cope with fear the longer that we are exposed to it.  To reach your potential the motivation must come from within.

The Path to Motivation

Identifying the source of motivation is only the first step.  Next, you have to experiment.  There are many ways one can spark their motivation.  Often, the motivation to get back to work is best found by doing something else.

    • Take a walk.  Getting out of your workspace and breathing in some fresh air can reinvigorate your body and your spirit.  Our outlook changes when we feel good, and modest exercise has a way of making us feel better.
    •  Read.  Whether it’s a favorite passage from a book or a salacious celebrity magazine, taking a break to read something that you enjoy provides a brief period of escape.
    •  Phone a friend.  The best way to not feel isolated is to connect with others.  Our friends know when we need to blow off a little steam.  Do that, and then talk about something else with your friend for a while. Once you’ve cleared your mind with diversion, it’s time to get back to work.  Reassess the reasons why you believed that your business was a good idea in the first place.  Don’t focus on the expectations that you had about the income that you would make.  Focus instead on the business concept itself.

Ask Yourself

Is the business something that you enjoy doing?  Is the product as good as you thought it was when you were first introduced to it?  Is there are a market for it?  Do you still believe it?

If the answer to these four questions is yes, you’re almost there.  If you answered yes, it means that the problem is not one of motivation at all, but rather a temporary response to things not progressing as quickly as you’d like.

Walk the Walk

Lackluster sales are a common occurrence for every business.  There’s no need to focus on the negative because your last sales meeting is not predictive of your next.  The only connection between the two is you.  Don’t bring thoughts of your last meeting to your next one.  Start fresh, and walk into your next meeting with the confidence that you felt in the beginning.

It’s your turn!

  1. In my case, because I am a writer, it is not just self-promotion that suffers when I lose motivation–the production end (aka the writing itself) suffers also. I am currently in the process of recovering my motivation (which was sapped by the end stage of a bad partnership); I am doing this by taking some time off and doing a couple of challenges (this month, the UBC; next month, the NaNovWriMo) and focusing just on stuff that I want to write…basically, I need to remind myself why I became a writer in the first place (aka I found it to be fun on most days).

  2. Hi Nate. We meet again! I needed your post today. Doubt does start to creep in when I see reading numbers start to drop. I’d eventually like to make money with my blog, but am still testing the waters. I come back to your posts time and time again for the best advice. Thank you

    Great post.
Think things are not progressing as fast as I’d like 🙁

      Hi Suzanna,

The best advice I can give is to stick with it. As you know that success online is a marathon, not a sprint. If you look at it from a perspective of being consistent daily, and over time it will look like you’ll have success in a very short amount of time. Thanks for the comments!

    Good post, Nate.
If I find motivation lacking, it’s because of a lull in business – and that leads to procrastination. That I become aware of very quickly! My best technique is, once you realize you’ll fallen in a habit of procrastination, is to do versions of what you say. Get up, go play with the dogs for 5 minutes, take a few minutes to be grateful, go for a walk, or drive to somewhere. Just changing your circumstances will often break the State and get you motivated and creative again!

      Hi Jon,

Those are very good tips. Sometimes we may lack motivation due to being burnt out. When we get burnt out, we are prone to taking less action. It’s good take breaks and to do something other than work. Thank you for the comments!

Nice tips! Staying motivated is a challenge. It’s nice to see there are lots of helpful resources already around the web. Other than that, a talk from the experts really helps more.

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hi Sue,

In addition to what you said, is help to take daily action as well. You don’t have to be perfect but you just have to be consistent. Thanks for the comments!

  7. I always think about the other option that is available to me (40/40 Plan) when staying motivated to building my business. Each week I go over the reasons I initially went into business for myself. There have been times where I can people that have experienced more business success and ask them how they stay motivated. Great post Nate!

    • Nate Leung says:

Yes the famous 40/40 plan. It should motivate people to build their business. Stay consistent, know why you’re doing the business and you’ll have success in no time. Thank you for the comments!

Very valuable information, indeed! I especially appreciate when you mentioned being excited about your product/service because it gets your customers excited, too. It is important to believe in what you do and hold on to the vision that you started out with. Periods of slow sales are inevitable but we cannot allow those times to be a discouragement.

    • Nate Leung says:

Well said Benita. Just keep moving and pushing forward. Thank you for the comments! 🙂

These are great tips. In order for me to stay motivated I find that I need to stay consistent. If I am not consistent, then I usually get off track. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Nate,

Doing serious introspection makes you think through why you are doing what you are doing. When I fell in love with being free I had no problems pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. Awesome points man.

If you know why, you will motivate yourself. If you do not, you will quit. I know because I quit on myself for many years, on and off, and I only REALLY fully bought in a few months ago.

Honest to goodness, it took me 4 years to finally say I need to follow the simple steps day by day because I know why I want to. It usually takes a bit to find clarity in why you do what you do.

    Great stuff Nate, thanks buddy.

      Hi Ryan,

Better late than never. I know many people will spin their hamster wheels all day long and not fully realize that they just need to take daily action steps. Thanks for the comments Ryan!

  12. Wonderful Nate! I love the idea of removing yourself from the workspace when things get tough or overwhelming. It’s important to clear our minds of work and stress every so often. I learned recently that we need to have time blocks for our business. 50 minutes of work then 10 minutes of something else (jumping jacks, snack, walk to the mail box, etc) just to give your mind and body a break. This is especially important when the motivation is dipping. Take a break to listen to an uplifting audio.

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hey Stefani,

Love your feedback. Time bursts and breaking up the routine is the best way to stay motivated. Using a stop watch is a great way to keep track of working in short bursts too. Thank you for the comments!

Great Article. I stay motivated by listen to my Inner Circle Audio and staying connected with like minded friends.

I think it truly is possible to let past struggles become a conscious or even subconscious negative energy that you bring to the new opportunity. Breaking the cycle through walking, exercising, and daily personal development will greatly help.

  15. Hi Nate,

I have to say that my biggest motivation is business! Besides my blog, marketing has become an addiction for me. I wake up in the morning and plan my day taking baby steps to various goals.

I haven’t been so fascinated in my life!
