Focus on SMART goals

The first part of creating the life of your dreams is actually understanding exactly what you want to accomplish in the first place. The creation of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound) goals differs dramatically from just creating a handful of wishes and dreams – things that you’ll never actually accomplish because you have an outline the specific path to achieving them. Make sure that everything about your future life is written down (on paper) and as specific as humanly possible and don’t be afraid of setting deadlines – they are essential.

Focus on where you want to be versus where you are now

This is the next critical distinction that you really need to make, and one that more and more people are waking up to on a regular and daily basis. The fact of the matter is that even if we fill our lives with “stuff”, we just won’t be as happy as we would be if we focus instead on creating the “who” we want to be. Get real on who you want to be in the future, and then make decisions based upon what that person would do in your situation.

Always – ALWAYS – focus on the long-term impact

As humans, we are almost wired to look only at the short-term impact of our decisions, which is exactly why we find ourselves in so much trouble on a regular basis. Look to the long-term game – the endgame, if you will – rather than just doing things that will give you short-term gratification.

Embrace the fact that life – and everything in it – is a process

The belief that you’ll be able to achieve some level of skill, success, or attain a handful of goals and then be able to stop and coast for the rest of your days is dangerous and even deadly. All of life is a process – with only one specific endpoint down the road. Always try to do better than you did yesterday.

The food that you put into your body is your fuel

There is absolutely nothing more important than focusing on the food that you put in your body and use to fuel your systems. If for no other reason, change your diet to a healthy eating plan just to make sure that your body is getting everything it needs for optimal function.

Quick bursts of energy and focus followed by rest and recovery are the absolute best way to get things done

We’ve been led to believe that multitasking is the be-all-end-all of productivity, but research has shown that multitasking actually decreases all of the productivity that we were hoping to achieve. The truth of the matter is that focusing on just a specific thing at a time, and then moving on to something once we’ve accomplished that task – is a much more efficient way to go about our business.

It’s your life – and you’re in charge

Finally, it’s important to understand that you (and you alone) responsible for the decisions that you make moving forward. While it’s nice to get feedback from the rest of the world, you’re going to have to pilot your own ship – be responsible for your life and you’ll find amazing things begin to happen.

    Wonderful post indeed 🙂

    I too had written a post a few months back on how you can live life to your fullest, though that was a little different. I believe that if you are focused and have defined your purpose in life, you can truly proceed ahead to fulfill your dreams you set out to achieve.

    Yes indeed, you need to do all the things you mentioned, which also includes taking care of yourself and your health, something most people tend to forget as they get so involved in their work half the time. Multi-tasking surely should be avoided as you lose focus on the real thing that you are trying to do, if you try to do too many things together.

    Oh yes.,’s our life and we need to take charge of it and make sure it is well lived 🙂

      I agree with you on taking care of your body first. I think we all tend to get in ‘grind’ mode, where we may forget to get more rest, maybe get out of the house, eating and drinking water! Little breaks, having balance… all this stuff matters. If you don’t have your health then you do not have a thriving business.

    Another great post. Reminds me of the story I’d heard from Brian Tracy, that in a study of what determined success, it wasn’t birth, education, etc.
    It was “Long Time Perspective”. Thinking not in ‘today’ or ‘next month’, but years down the road and making decisions now to move in that direction.

      I love it! Very good way of looking at long time perspective. As long as you’re consistent, that long time doesn’t seem like a “long time”. As we all know that Rome was not built in a day, so with that being said, success, our business, the end vision, all leads to a process. A process that we as entrepreneurs have to be patient with.   4. SMART goals. Awesome! I am so much better at making “good ideas” rather than goals. This has been a topic on my mind for a while. In fact, I just got myself a GOAL book. This book will record all of the goals I have in life. And they will be SMART goals. 🙂

      Yes, ideas are smart, because that’s what catapults into concepts. Simple things such as goals are a challenge for many people, why? It’s extra work that we often look at as “not important”. We put goal setting on the bottom part of our lists. It’s not as cool as making money, generating leads, converting your leads into signups. But if the goals are not set in place, then none of what I had mentioned will be achieved. Thanks for the feedback Stefani!

    I really like the SMART goals. I’ve seen it before but never knew what the acronym meant. There’s a lot of us who have dreams, but they are only dreams if we don’t wake up and take action.

    It can be a challenge for a lot of us to go out and walk the walk instead of just talking the talking all the time. That’s why it’s a great idea to have some type of goals, write them down, and follow through. This shows how serious you are and gives you an outline of what you need to do in order to accomplish them.

    I like the fact that you pointed out to look at the long-term affect. The reason why people are stagnant because they only focus on the short term goals. Best thing to do is to focus on the long term and use the short term as stepping stones for you to get better each day. This is how the successful think!

  10. Focus on where you want to go… its like racing a car. You always wan t to look where your going. the minute you loose focus and look at the wall when speeding around the turn is the moment you loose control and end up in the wall. Look where you want to go. put on the blinders and make it happen

    Another great article. The vast majority of people have goals that are not focused and detailed like the S.M.A.R.T approach. The vast majority of people will live out their lives without ever achieving many of their goals that they set out ot accomplish.

    I have found when I am totally focused on what I envision I can make it happen. The bad part is that I have not done that enough in my life.

    Since it worked so well on getting the car I wanted (took 6 months) that since I want to move I have set the wheels in motion to make that happen. Not sure how, but I am determined to make it happen on my terms.

    Lot of great information and I do like your “SMART”.

      Many of us can relate where we have this great “light bulb” idea and something stops us from taking action. Little steps, leads to progression, leads to results. I’ve learned that even myself that has little knowledge on a certain task, with action, learning and implementing, I get better over time.

      Yes, when you star to move your physiology, everything else starts to move with it. That’s how momentum is created and that’s awesome to hear that you got to get the car that you wanted. You took the action, made some moves and it happened.
