Personal Development Blog: How to Get People to Like You in 90 Seconds or Less

The reason there are so many clichés about first impressions is that they really do matter. Fair or not, people often form opinions about you based solely on the first few minutes they know you. Even though a first impression might only take seconds to make, it can take years to undo it, which is why it is key to know how to increase the chances that people’s first impression of you will get a good one. Here are some tips for your own personal development that will help you get people to like you in 90 seconds or less.

Look Nice, and people will take notice

We may not want to admit it, but we often form impressions about people based on the way they look. You should always dress for success and make sure you are appropriately outfitted for the occasion. This doesn’t mean you have to walk around in a tuxedo all day, but you should dress the way you want people to perceive you. Those that don’t know you well might get a negative opinion of you simply based on the way you look, so be sure to dress for the impression you want to make.

Give out compliments

When it comes to compliments you need to use them judiciously. Also, it is important to not just compliment a person on the way they look, as this could actually offend them. You could give compliments on their ideas, the questions they are asking or other issues that come up in conversation. A good compliment can go a long way towards making someone like you.

Be excited about your ideas with people

If you are in a business meeting or trying to convince a client to buy your product, you need to be excited about your ideas. If you are not excited, there is no chance the potential client will get behind your idea.

Ask questions

There is no doubt that most people enjoy talking about themselves, which is why it is important to ask plenty of questions. You shouldn’t get too personal when first meeting someone, but questions about a person’s background or job are a good way to get them talking. If you are in a business situation you can ask about the person’s plans for the future or their ideas about marketing etc.

Remember their name

Nothing is more infuriating than when a person doesn’t remember your name. When you don’t remember a person’s name you can make them feel irrelevant or unmemorable, which is not a good way to get them to like you. Remembering a person’s name shows them that you value them and that you were paying attention while they were speaking.

Keep it positive

If you really want a person to like you in 90 seconds or less then you should be sure to keep the conversation positive. This means avoiding topics that might require a strong opinion or could be offensive to some people. By following these tips you will be far more likely to make a good impression.

  1. What an excellent post! As everyone knows the cliche… people have to know, like, and trust you before they will ever do business with you… and they will never get to know or trust you if they never like you the first place.

    Great job my friend!

I read a book about this topic awhile back and it puts a great perspective on how those 90 sec’s are the most important.  I think the simple points you outlined is awesome. It’s really not that hard, we just need to be sure we do them and do them correctly.
    Thanks for the reminder.
