How To Brand Yourself – Humanizing Your Business- Part 1

There were times when business and the customers were two separate entities, and because of lack of competition, a business cared less about the customers and did what it deemed fit whether it was pertaining to production or marketing. However, competition has changed everything and if there is one thing that successful businesses care about these days is their customer.

These days, businesses want to attract the attention of the customers and the best way of doing so at present is by humanizing the brand. Customers are no more interested in the infrastructure of the buildings a business owns, rather they are interested in the human side of the business, and therefore, it has become imperative for businesses to humanize their brand.

I would like to share a few tips regarding humanizing your bran, however, these tips will take more length than the normal posts, so I’ve decided to break it down into a series of posts. The lines below give the first part of the series of tips on humanizing your brand.

How to Brand Yourself - Humanizing Your Business- Part1

Use your image:

The first thing pertaining to humanizing your brand is to use your personal image or photo to tell the customers about the brains behind the business. In this regard, you can use your photo on your website and let the customers know that you are as human as they are and you are not just a building or an office that keeps on doing things, rather you are a person and you are willing to deal with the customers on a personal level. Therefore, instead of using logos and pictures of your magnificent office or the equipment you have installed, use your personal image or photo on the website to take the humanizing initiative.

Blog:

The second important thing pertaining to humanizing the business is using a blog. A blog is the mouthpiece of the business, therefore, whatever gets shared on the blog indirectly represents the ideology and thinking of the business. Most businesses make the mistake of using a blog as a means of marketing and do nothing but present the product or services of the business. This approach is wrong and this is definitely not the purpose of the blog.

With a blog, a business shares its stance and thinking about different issues and aspects related to niche as well as to life. Therefore, when a customer comes to the blog of the business, the objective of the customer is to know more about the brand and its ideologies and not what the brand is selling. Ergo, make blogs informative and for the customers, instead of just making them about business.

Social Media:

If you are serious about humanizing your business and you don’t have any social presence, then I am afraid that either you are not serious at all or you don’t have any clue about the humanizing of your business. In the world of today if there is one thing that single handily leads the humanizing arena it is social media. You have to be present on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and every other social media channel to communicate and interact with your customers on a personal level. Thus, when you manage to interact with your customers on a personal level, it means that you have successfully humanized your business.

  3. I agree about inserting your personality into your business. A case in point is an English frozen food company. The owner was featured in a series of TV stories and he’s even brought out his own book. He’s very human and freely admits to his mistakes.

I like letting ME flow through my blog and social media profiles. Doing so makes it easier for people to know, like and trust ME 😉 lol….awesome tips Nate, looking forward to the next update!

  13. Krystle says:

I have all the steps above except the social media down. I am still warming up to it, so once I have that down, I’ll be good to go.

  14. Frank Joseph says:

Awesome tips, and having your image on your business, make people to trust what you are offering…
And that is branding in it highest form.

Also, social media is now playing a huge role in our online business. Anyone who is not on any of this social network is missing a big part of the puzzle!

  15. Sophie Bowns says:

Social media is very helpful for advertising things. I find my Facebook ‘like’ page very helpful!

  16. Great points – and so true – back to building relationships and helping our audience know who we are and being real for them. Thanks, Nate

  17. Jan Kearney says:

    Great tips Nate.
Although I agree with you on all points you’ve mentioned – I still find it very difficult to see my face there and the “me-ness” of my business!

  18. Jen says:

Great advice. I know when I read a business blog I want to read about what I’m shopping for, not how the business is run. As a blogger, consumer and social media enthusiast I agree with this 100%.

  19. Lisa Mallis says:

I’m excited this will be a series. It’s common knowledge that people purchase from people they like, know, and trust. Yet, up until a year ago, I used my logo as the face of my business instead of – well, my face. I’m thrilled that you listed that as a strategy today.

I’m still finding my balance on my blog between sharing my personality and marketing. I want to appear human and approachable, yet also professional. I’m making progress!

    Thanks for the excellent post!

I would love to see your videos, too! When can we expect to find your videos online? 🙂

  21. The human factor is what makes any brand successful, I think. While we might like certain products / brands for what they offer, building loyalty has everything to do with the humanization of the brand.

  22. Richa Singh says:

social media and blogs play a huge role today everywhere..

  23. John Engle says:

    Hey Nate,

You have stated what I have been telling my mother about her Bed and Breakfast business, along the lines of her blog and social media.

You hit the nail on the head… “People Don’t Join a Business, They Join You.”

    Great Article…

Be expecting to hear from my mother Dee Bates… I sent her this link and told her a little bit about you.

    Have an awesome day…

    John Engle

  24. Dee Bates says:

I really appreciated your thoughts! Being somewhat computer illiterate and just starting out in the ‘blogging’ world your suggestions are very valuable. I have posted two blogs and headed for my third, so will take your advice to heart and try to include your ideas! Many thanks and I look forward to reading future posts!

  25. Edie Dykeman says:

I’ve been blogging for at least five or six years but I’m just now starting to use my image in a smarter way. Also trying to increase my time on various social media sites. The problem is I’ve only so many hours a day and I’m trying to move a bit faster through the social media sites so that I can get back to adding content, etc. We need to be able to balance it all out to be the most effective.

Good job. Looking for the next portion of your article.

  26. Branding yourself is a very important step to take, Nate. I did it some years ago and have never looked back. Recently I have branded my ebay sales template so customers can now see who I am and who they are buying from.

    Enjoy the journey.

    Mandy

  27. Nate, that was a great post on branding yourself!

    Thanks for sharing!

  28. Liz Delaney says:

Love your post Nate. I have all of the above mentioned things in place – am just trying to get my head around all the social media options out there. Thanks for your advice.

  29. Great post. I do all of these things, but I really need to step up my social media efforts. Good post!

    Michael

  30. Esha says:

I agree with your pointers Nate, social media really helps to set up your brand image.

  31. Very good tips! I find that I’m more likely to buy something from a company that has an online presence and that I believe would be able to assist in case of anything. Which is why blogging is a very good way to brand yourself! Well said!

  32. Hi Nate,

Awesome post today. I think for the most part people are getting the idea that you have to “go back” to human contact and that it all comes down to people join people, not businesses.

    Have a wonderful day.

  33. Mary Austin says:

I agree! A great mainstream example is how published authors are using social media. William Kent Krueger, one of my favorite mystery authors, posts on Facebook frequently. He includes photos of the bookstores where he is signing books, and photos with readers who are thrilled to meet him in person. I was very excited to post a comment on his Facebook fan page, and he replied! Elizabeth Gilbert also makes great use of Social media (Eat, Pray, Love and The Signature Of All Things). She tweets photos that her readers send her and on Facebook she also posts comments and photos as she travels around the world promoting her latest book. I call it the “Oprah Effect.” Because of the social media sharing they do, we begin to think we know them personally. Hmmm, maybe I will do a blog post about that!

  34. Hey Nate,

Humanizing the business is like saying “like attracts like”. Be able to show how human your brand is will open the floodgates to more prospects and customers to your door. It you allow yourself to let people get to know you through blogging, social media, or just through your photos, then this gives you a great start from building a great connection as well as propel your business!

  35. Barb Sibbing says:

Nate loved the article. I have just been through the process of re-branding myself and business In fact still putting some finishing touches on it! This was great and I so agree that having a picture of yourself so people can see who they are or might be doing business with. People buy from people they know, like and trust and by putting a face on your site does give that human touch!

    Barb

  36. Merle says:

These are all great tips Nate and essential for any online business. Thanks for sharing.

  37. I think having a blog is so important now, more than ever. Because ther internet is working it’s way towards being more “human” a blog allows someone to really share their knowledge and visitors get to know them ….. looking forward to Part 2!

  38. Hi Nate,
I like what you write and I think it is true, the future will be more interacting with people in social media and blogs, I too would like to know with whom I do business. And I like people who work from the heart, not only to make money. Looking forward to see your next article. Thank you.

  39. I liked immediately how you pointed out that people used to be concerned more about the infrastructure of the business building but now are very focused on the human side of the brand.
    How things have changed!
Photo’s are great way to draw people to you, and creating interesting and focused social profiles can show your personal and business brand … which as you say, has now merged significantly 🙂
    Thanks Nate
    Jacs

Thanks for sharing..! That is really nice article about branding our business. Well, actually It is too simple about this but sometime the most of people don’t that using the own image is the best to build online reputation. Also, working on social media and help other to solve the issue will build more trust of the business. The follow will love us. That is really nice article

  41. Hey Nate long time no see. Great post as usual. And 3 great points on how to brand yourself. So far I believe I have these 2 covered. Thanks for sharing..
