MLM Tips: 3 Reasons Why You Should Not Be An MLM Jumper

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. But some just . . . quit. And others jump ship. In the challenging world of MLM Network Marketing, this dilemma pops up quite a bit.

Most of the time, things don’t go as planned for people, at least in the beginning.

Adversity starts to happen, life gets in the way.  This is to be expected for just about everything: You don’t start a sport and get good on day one, just like you don’t start a business and get rich in the first month.

Some people don’t get a simple idea that success takes time. Many of these people just . . . Quit.

They obviously don’t get anywhere by giving up on their dreams. That leaves us with two options: Persist or jump ship. But what exactly do we mean by jumping ship?

3 Reasons Why You Should Not Be an MLM Jumper

A Step Back

Before we talk about that, though, let’s take a step back at how MLM Network Marketing tends to work. Usually, people will sign up through a MLM opportunity that has things set up for them. A few people set things up themselves, but this is rare and inefficient.

When you sign up with an MLM opportunity, all of the people in your organization are associated with the group, promoting the same product or service. This bolsters the effectiveness of teamwork, and, in fact, forces it, which is necessary for success in the MLM world.

Jumping Ship

Okay. Now we can talk about what it means to jump ship. Jumping ship – or MLM jumping, as it’s more frequently called in the business – is the practice of switching from one MLM firm to another, or at least I like to call it, “Shiny Object Syndrome”.

This entails a complete change in products, services, distributors, uplines, downlines, and . . . Well, just about everything, really. This is obviously confusing to manage, which is one great reason already not to be an MLM jumper.

Why Jump?

It sounds silly in theory. So why do people do it in practice? Simple. They don’t see immediate results with one opportunity; they choose not to let go of their dreams of big money, and instead let go of their work ethic; and then choose to start from scratch with a different MLM opportunity, expecting that the change in scenery will bring success.

Everyone’s reason is different.  It could be that they are not getting the results they are expecting when they signed up.  Maybe, it’s the product or service that isn’t selling as well as they hoped.  The people in their warm market told them “no”.

The problem starts with the mindset.

Many reps who join these types of deals get distracted, frustrated or discouraged when things don’t go their way.  They don’t understand that in order to get results, they have to go through a process.

That’s why jumpers always fail, or only succeed infrequently, by chance. Because they have to re-engineer everything from the beginning, including their downlines, and do things their way, where in reality, the system has already been set in stone.  All they have to do is follow the plan.

This makes it virtually impossible for them ever to succeed because they’re always starting from scratch.

3 Reasons Why You Should Not Be an MLM Jumper

Don’t give up!

You have to stick to your guns when things get challenging.  This much we all know from experience. But you have to. It’s the only way to make it out alive, let alone wealthy. If you believe in your comp plan, your opportunity, and your products or service, you will make it.

Now it’s your turn.  Have you been jumping from opportunity to opportunity?

If so, how has it worked out?  Has it worked out in your favor or has it frustrated you in even more?  Be sure to leave a comment below and I look forward to reading your comments!

      Hey Annette!

Yes, no matter what it happens to all of us where doubt will kick in, fear starts to crawl into your mind. Then you start to second guess yourself. If success was easy, everyone would be wealthy. I don’t believe that it’s hard, but it is a process. A process that has to be consistent. See you at the top Annette!

  2. Fantastic post, Nate!!! Thank you for sharing your insights!!!

  3. One strange thing happens for persistent folks Nate; they become wildly successful and powerful lol! Really the successes all emulate became so good at doing 1 thing that people had to take notice, and doing that one thing means promoting one opportunity for a sustained period of time.

Otherwise, you look like an impatient, desperate failure and loser to boot because nobody trusts an impatient, worried, desperate person. Persist. Succeed.

    Thanks for sharing!

It can be tempting to jump to another MLM. We are constantly meeting other marketers, and getting promotions. But you have to believe in your company and stick with it.

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hey Pam,

It can be tempting and stick to your guns and keep moving!

Nate you are absolutely on point with the 3 reasons why you shouldn’t jump MLM. The sad fact is that the vast majority of people always flocked to the newest hottest thing and have no staying power with their current MLM.

Thanks for sharing the awesome content sir!

Nate, I heard a great interview once with Todd Falcone and Mark Yarnell. They both said that you pick a horse and ride it with the blinders on no matter what happens. If you have the belief in the company and products, nothing should stop you even in the face of troubles with the company. Both of them were in companies years ago that either failed or were in trouble and both are multi-millionaires despite. They didn’t flee, they kept going.

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hey William!

Good to see you here buddy. I heard something the other day where one marketer was prospecting another marketing and convincing him to jump ships. The one that was being prospected said, jumping from MLM to MLM, is like cheating on your spouse. Why would I do that? It’s very true when you think about it. Appreciate the comments!

  8. Alexsandra Benfield says:

I agree totally, too many give up before even giving it a real chance!!!
    WHO gets rich over night???
Give it a couple of years, it Will pay off!!! Then all the jumpers Will be jelous!!!!

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hi Alexsandra,

One of the key components to success is not giving up. Most people need to realize that success is not a destination, it’s a journey. There is going to be adversity and challenges. Just like anything in life, business applies as well. Work it, stay consistent and the results will happen. Appreciate the comments Alexsandra!

  9. Oh it is so tempting always as the grass always looks greener from a ways back.
I agree that sticking with it the best and intelligent choice unless there is a really good reason for a change of mind. Either way success comes with focus, dedication and persistence as well as believing in ourselves and the company we are working with.

  10. Adam Payne says:

With all the distractions out there, it must be hard for MLMers to keep focus but that is what they must do. That said, if you have huge success in one, then taking on another should be an option.

    Thanks Nate.

  11. Bill Garner says:

Network marketing jumpers fail to understand that when they move from one opportunity to the next, the one common denominator in the switch is themselves. They change opportunities, but they don’t change their mindset and their daily disciplines.

Of course, there are exceptions. I myself moved around a couple of times before I found the right network marketing home. I’ve been in that same home for three years now, and there hasn’t even been a hint of interest in anything else.

You can move a few times, but with each move, you will potentially erode credibility. To your success!

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hi Bill,

Yes, there are exceptions. I agree with you. Sometimes it does take a few to find the right one. It could be the company or it could be timing and skill sets. Everyone’s timing is always different. If one doesn’t work out, you get up and you keep moving and moving forward. Thanks for the comments Bill. 🙂

  12. Luke Blower says:

Hey Nate, jumping from program to program can work if you’re a top,top marketer and have the advertsing funds to really leverage especially new opps. But for us mere mortals, the silver object syndrome can be the most damaging things.

  13. Lindsey says:

A person who switches MLM companies out of impatience or frustration is destructive. But I believe there are circumstances in which a change can be constructive. This industry is all about a system. A new person with no skills must be taught the system. Though rare, it is possible that an individual could find him or herself in a situation where there is no upline mentorship or skills training whatsoever. If you couple this with a company that has very few tools, the challenge could be overwhelming to a new person.

I think that mentorship is crucial to longterm success. Self-development, tenacity, and not making decisions based on emotions are too.

Generally it is not a good idea to jump from one company to another. It destroys credibility. In a profession like network marketing, credibility is everything; however, I disagree that it is always a bad decision.
