3 Reasons Why Personal Development Matters in MLM

Time is money. That means wasted time is wasted money. If you’ve started to develop an interest in MLM, you’ll hear variations on this theme with high frequency. What you won’t hear frequently, if at all, is advice on how not to waste time. There are a number of reasons for this – many writing about network marketing simply don’t care to think about the “meta” level stuff, and others just don’t want you to know their latest and greatest business secrets. But you’ve hit the jackpot – we want you to know what the secret is: Personal development.

Personal Development Matters

. . . Really?

This is one of those things we say that makes people go, “Huh?”, but it’s true. Not convinced? Think of it this way. If you’re constantly brooding over your personal problems, you will not focus on your business. If you do not focus on your MLM business?  What makes you think people will want to join your MLM business? If you keep focusing on why you’re not being successful or why you’re not making money, that’s exactly what’s going to happen.  You’re not going to make any money.  Keep dwelling and focusing on things that keep you down, expect more of it… You get the idea. This is the first big reason that personal development matters: It helps you make money because it keeps you focused.

Easy as Pie

Think of a CEO, a good salesperson, or a talented manager. Now, what’s the one thing they’d all have in common?

Confidence. Something all successful business people have in common is confidence, and this fact is so important we’ll say it twice: All successful business people, without exception, are confident in themselves, their businesses, and their success, whether present or eventual. Without sufficient personal development, the sort of confidence you need to successfully run a business simply won’t come. But when the confidence is there, it’s easier to sell, which makes it easier to make money.

Still not convinced this whole “personal development” thing means much? Fair enough, but there’s one more thing you should be aware of before you judge.

Personal Development Matters

Getting Better, Becoming Wealthy

That last thing is the simple fact that like it or not, personal development is necessary for successful forays into MLM. All businesses ultimately reflect their administration, and since you’re the primary driving force behind your own MLM niche, that niche will reflect you. If you’re immature in any way, that will come through in your pitches and management, which will result to lower-income streams.

That doesn’t mean you have to be perfect, or even all that much “better” than normal. It just means you have to be constantly striving to be better. The greatest enterprises are those that recognize they can always improve and have the mind to consistently do it. If this is the mentality you adopt, your business will grow as you do – sometimes faster – and as you and your business grow, so will your profits. And that’s what we’re all after in the end, isn’t it? So there you have it – three reasons personal development matters in MLM.

Now it’s your turn!

    Another solid post, Nate.
Fact is, if you *listen* to what Leaders say, you’ll notice that over and over again some of the Top earners credit their success not to a system, a company, or a pay plan.
Repeatedly, they credit their personal development and having the habits of working on it every day. Whether it’s audio books while they exercise, or read in the morning, they make a commitment to it daily.
It’s it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me. You don’t have to understand to get started, just copy the high income earners and you’ll understand later!

      Hey Jon!

They sure do. Can’t deny that! Doesn’t matter how long they been with a company or pay plan, one thing they cannot do without is personal development. That is the foundation of our business. You hit the nail on the head today! Thank you for the comments Jon! 🙂

  2. I absolutely believe personal development is a MUST if a person is to be successful in ANY industry. I learned the hard way. I had NO success in the first MLM I was a part of bc I did not prioritize personal development. Now, I am making more money that I ever imagined and I can attribute it to working on myself!

      Hey Dana!

That’s awesome! Great testimonial of how personal development helped you!

  3. Aretha Wright says:

Personal development matters for the simple fact that when we learn all there is concerning our company, then we make strategies for profitability.

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hey Aretha!

Well said! You’re exactly right! Thank you for the comments!

  4. You’ll hear most people on the stage at the events talk about their personal journey means more to them than the money they’ve made. That’s the side of personal development. It’s really awesome!

    Hey Nate,

For a long time, I tried to build a business without having the proper foundation in place and that’s mindset. I struggled for so many years and I kick myself in the butt for not working on what matters the most which is mindset. I’ve learned over the years that life is 10% of what happens, meaning the outcome of what I cannot control and 90% is how I respond to it. Personal Development is everything. Thank you for the reminder! 🙂

      Hey Lacey,

Great to see a new visitor! That’s awesome. It’s never too late to divulge into personal development!

  6. Hey Nate,

Personal Development is the secret that’s going to keep you aligned and growing. Without it, you’ll turn your attention to those things that will keep you from being successful. So it’s vital to keep making room for growth. The more you grow the more successful you become!

    Great insight Nate!

I think self-confidence can be a really big barrier for some people, including myself at times. I guess the fear of failure palys a big part in this.

Personal development is what a person needs if he is looking for that breakthrough. It is the foundation of success in business.

  9. Vanessa Marie Moody says:

It all starts with Mindset which is an area we can all continue to improve upon and need to practice with on a daily basis lest we forget. We must work on ourselves before we can work on helping others. And there is so much great FREE information out there, there’s just no excuse for finding quality audios or videos or books. YouTube is great as well. For those who are ready, they can find what they need.

  10. Excellent post, Nate, and I had to come here and tell you that I’ve just wrote about entrepreneurship and personal development today! So matching what you’re talking about here.

As a matter of fact there is usually a use difference between “employees” and their “employers”. The difference is that the latter know about and practice personal development. Many of them even have a life coach, read success books and so on.

Also I notice that entrepreneurs tend to stay healthy as well and they exercise regularly.

    Great tips 🙂

    Nate,

I couldn’t agree more about having confidence, not only in myself, but in the company I represent. People know when someone truly believes in the company they are involved with. I think that has been part of my problem. I really bought the sizzle but didn’t buy the steak.

It’s funny that I came across your article. I recently found out that Jim Lutes and Jim Britt are getting ready to launch a personal development based MLM. Personal development and financial security. Sounds good to me. I’m feeling more confident by the minute. (grin)

I used to be big on personal growth but have been letting myself go. Good times are right around the corner.

    Be well.

    Jim

I did wonder why personal development was closely tied to network marketing. In fact, that was my Google search that found you. This was a pretty solid explanation as to why. More work required upstairs is the key to success.
