10 Leadership Tips For Millennial Entrepreneurs

The generations of a few decades back were the ones who were happy in landing a reliable job and would spend their whole life doing the same job, without any adventure or risk. However, things have changed dramatically in the last decade, and now people want to be entrepreneurs and risk-takers. They Millennial don’t want to be employees; rather they want to be owners.

With the pursuit of ownership and a higher-level management position, the one thing that millennials need to be most aware of is leadership. A millennial cannot be a loved and respected entrepreneur unless he or she has the leadership qualities in his or her personality. For those of you who share the spirit of millennials, I share with you ten leadership skills that every millennial must strive for.

10 Leadership Tips For Millennials

Have A Vision:

Someone who cannot see something that is yet to occur and lacks the ability to conceptualize it cannot be a leader. For a leader, it is imperative to have a vision. It is the vision that differentiates a leader from the rest of the people, as a leader with vision inspires while the rest follow the visionary.

Exceptional Communication Skills:

The other thing required for a leader in the possessing of exceptional communication skills. I call it ‘exceptional skills’ because the job of a leader is hard when it comes to communication because on contrary to common people who communicate thoughts and feelings, a leader has to communicate the vision. Similarly, common people converse with people of their kind, so they don’t have to work on communication. On the other hand, a leader has to address people with different communication skills at the same time, therefore, there should be universality in the communication skills of a leader.

Optimism Is The Key:

When all of the rest leave hope, it is the leader who hopes and emerges as a symbol of hope for those who follow him or her. Being a leader means being an optimist even in the worst of situations, therefore, if you think you lack this quality in your personality, then I am afraid that you have a long way to go and you need to learn to think positive.

Lead By Example:

Although the speech of a leader has an effect on the followers, however, in actual, it is the actions of the leader that inspire and motivate people to think more, to do more and to be more. Therefore, in addition to keeping people motivated with your talks, try leading by being an example.

Be Open To Feedback:

Being a leader does not mean that you become infallible. Rather, every one commits mistakes and that is what keeps the learning curve going. Therefore, in order to be a good leader, you need to be open to feedback and should take feedback generously instead of thinking of it as some ill.

Lead From The Front:

Whatever you say, people will only follow and respect you when you lead by example. Therefore, whatever path you have selected for people to follow, be the first one to walk on that path instead of just directing people towards it and not doing anything by yourself.

Take Responsibility:

Shifting the blame on others is something people of low character do. Being a leader means you having a great character and for that, you need to take responsibility for your actions and accept wherever and whenever you are wrong. Therefore, take responsibility for your actions, which will then have the same effect among your followers, thus, people will become more responsible and committed.

What Appreciation, Empathy and Gratitude All Have In Common2

Take The Necessary Action:

Perhaps the most crucial thing which most of the leaders lack is taking the necessary action. Out of lack of will, or the fear of losing the respect of people, the leaders don’t take the necessary action, which ultimately causes all the associated people to pay heavily. Therefore, if you wish to be a visionary leader, then you need to do what is necessary.

Don’t Let Go Of Patience:

Initially, no one will follow you, then there will be times when people would doubt your sincerity, and then there will be others who would conspire against you. In all this, the one thing that will keep you going strong and long is patience. Therefore, never ever lose patience, instead, try increasing it.

There Is No Single Style:

The biggest problem with leaders is that they dedicate or commit themselves to a particular leadership style. In doing so they forget that they are leaders of people, and as there is diversity in people, so should be there in the leadership style. Therefore, don’t bound yourself with a single style, rather be volatile and dynamic as the situation demands.

I love all your remarks regarding how a leader needs to be for their followers, but the one thing that stands out the most is “take responsibility” for your actions.

Why you do what you do and the ability to fess up when you mess up. No shifting the blame to anyone else – your shoulders are broad enough to handle the blame! As a leader, you need not be defensive at all.

There was a recent incident at the bank teller window that reminded me of this…. but that’s another story for a later time.

    Thanks for sharing your insight!

  2. I love your admonishment to remain patient, despite opposition or lack of followers. That’s what I practice. I wonder how long it will take before hordes of people trample each other trying to buy my novels?

  3. Hi Nate,
I think a lot of leaders come from people being in jobs where they found these traits restricted, so they set out on their own, and leave a trail for others to follow.
Some of the traits can be worked on and developed, I think some have to have been there all along!
    cheers,
    Gordon

Great post, Nate. I had never thought of lead by example and lead from the front as two different ideas until reading your post. Thanks for the distinction!

Another interesting thing to point out is that a leader is different from a manager for all the above reasons!

Nate, that vision sets all else in motion. Thanks dude!

  9. Great tips and they helped me to identify the two areas I truly need to work on: Optimism and action.

I live in the UK and I always admired the leadership of Theo Paphitis, he is well known for an entrepreneurship program Dragon’s den: Find your passion and follow it.

I truly believe in helping and adding value to people lives.

Thanks for the great tips. I was trying to think of a leader that has made me person that I am today but I think it was myself. =)

  11. Awesome list! What do you think about women being leaders? Do you think being a leader is worth social persecution? Some people never get the satisfaction of support. Great words to live by… for the “common man.” =) Blessings~

  12. Great list of leadership qualities! So glad you mentioned optimism. Without optimism, there is no enthusiasm, which I think it a main ingredient. Thanks for sharing!

  13. Hi Nate,

Great tips on leadership for Entrepreneurs. Indeed Leadership is the ability to attract and lead people into action towards a goal.

I am glad you put the vision as the first one. A leader must have a vision as it’s the creation of the entrepreneur’s dream. A leader must have a clear sense of where they want to go and how they intend to get there. They see the big picture and create a plan to achieve their goal.

Thanks Nate for sharing with us the awesome list of leadership tips!! Have yourself a great rest of the week.

    Be Blessed,

    Neamat

  14. What a great list of leadership tips. Having a vision and the optimism to get there are so important in a leader. Being able to see the big picture when no one else can is key.

  15. Excellent tips, especially “Be open to feedback.” I make it a point to ask for feedback. I also like to listen to the people I admire and get pointers from them. It’s a constant work in progress! 😉 Great post!

I am a leader in my profession and people try to emulate and copy what I do. I look at that as flattery. Thanks for the confirmation of the importance of being a leader.

  17. Gina says:

Great list of leadership qualities, Nate. I’m glad you included “there is no single style”. An effective leader bases his/her style on the needs of the people being led and the dynamic being experienced at the time.

  18. Veronica says:

Great post! As usual! I believe in leading by example. You should have a servant’s heart when you are a leader. I admire so many people in my field and often find inspiration from their leadership qualities

You are so right that there is a difference between a leader and a manager. As the owner of my company I think I am a leader because my interest in the company is different than a manager who is really hired to manage people. I can’t expect my employees to take any initiatives unless I show them how and what are the rewards. What I have found useful is to listen and evaluate what others have to say.

Good points Nate. One area in my leadership development I have come to a conclusion of is on the topic of vision. Too many people are forcing it and are led to believe they have to have it all at once.

That’s not how it works. It starts with getting into the arena, learning the problems you solve, matching them up, and then finding your uniqueness. Once that happens, one’s vision becomes clear and focused. You can see it throughout history in war, government and business. Vision doesn’t just happen, it’s a process.

Although you aim your tips at Millennial Entrepreneurs they are valid for all. So many from the earlier generations who were happy with their stable, reliable jobs but as they become increasingly soul destroying they turn to online Entrepreneurship.

Anything they’ve learned about leadership and management need adding to and reworking when marketing online. You’re so right about the need to be flexible and changing mindsets and techniques if necessary.

  22. Hi Nate,

Great blog you have here, and those are 10 great tips not to be taken lightly if we want to succeed in our business. I must emphasis on your point of not letting go of patience. Success is a long term process, it takes great determination and the ability to overcome stumbling blocks or obstacles are important.

    Hey Nate,
Great post about leadership. I also think that a leader need to be able to serve their following. Meaning, acknowledge those on your team that rise.
Leaders are also not afraid to see their team do better then them. Be willing to see the leadership skills in others also.

I love your insight and I appreciate you sharing this post.

  24. One of my faves is lead by example. If the leader isn’t willing to demonstrate the traits they are looking for in their team, why should team members buy in? The double standard does not work in leadership. Great list you have here!

  25. Sharon O'Day says:

Generational duties and responsibilities have shifted over the years, regardless of age, making Millennials look like bad guys who carry forward high-expectations …

  26. Hey Nate,

When it comes to leadership, you must, I repeat you must lead by example. This is proof that you actually walk the walk instead of just talking the talk. When they can actually see you take actions, that instills some faith in themselves and as you as a leader.

I also believe that there isn’t no one particular “best” style when it comes to leadership. You must be able to adjust yourself to different personalities since you are dealing with people. This is one mistake I seen some people make, including myself. You have to realize that each person responds differently to different situation and it is wise to not to stay bound to one way when communicating with them!

    Thanks for sharing Nate!
