The generations of a few decades back were the ones who were happy in landing a reliable job and would spend their whole life doing the same job, without any adventure or risk. However, things have changed dramatically in the last decade, and now people want to be entrepreneurs and risk-takers. They Millennial don’t want to be employees; rather they want to be owners.
With the pursuit of ownership and a higher-level management position, the one thing that millennials need to be most aware of is leadership. A millennial cannot be a loved and respected entrepreneur unless he or she has the leadership qualities in his or her personality. For those of you who share the spirit of millennials, I share with you ten leadership skills that every millennial must strive for.
Have A Vision:
Someone who cannot see something that is yet to occur and lacks the ability to conceptualize it cannot be a leader. For a leader, it is imperative to have a vision. It is the vision that differentiates a leader from the rest of the people, as a leader with vision inspires while the rest follow the visionary.
Exceptional Communication Skills:
The other thing required for a leader in the possessing of exceptional communication skills. I call it ‘exceptional skills’ because the job of a leader is hard when it comes to communication because on contrary to common people who communicate thoughts and feelings, a leader has to communicate the vision. Similarly, common people converse with people of their kind, so they don’t have to work on communication. On the other hand, a leader has to address people with different communication skills at the same time, therefore, there should be universality in the communication skills of a leader.
Optimism Is The Key:
When all of the rest leave hope, it is the leader who hopes and emerges as a symbol of hope for those who follow him or her. Being a leader means being an optimist even in the worst of situations, therefore, if you think you lack this quality in your personality, then I am afraid that you have a long way to go and you need to learn to think positive.
Lead By Example:
Although the speech of a leader has an effect on the followers, however, in actual, it is the actions of the leader that inspire and motivate people to think more, to do more and to be more. Therefore, in addition to keeping people motivated with your talks, try leading by being an example.
Be Open To Feedback:
Being a leader does not mean that you become infallible. Rather, every one commits mistakes and that is what keeps the learning curve going. Therefore, in order to be a good leader, you need to be open to feedback and should take feedback generously instead of thinking of it as some ill.
Lead From The Front:
Whatever you say, people will only follow and respect you when you lead by example. Therefore, whatever path you have selected for people to follow, be the first one to walk on that path instead of just directing people towards it and not doing anything by yourself.
Shifting the blame on others is something people of low character do. Being a leader means you having a great character and for that, you need to take responsibility for your actions and accept wherever and whenever you are wrong. Therefore, take responsibility for your actions, which will then have the same effect among your followers, thus, people will become more responsible and committed.
Take The Necessary Action:
Perhaps the most crucial thing which most of the leaders lack is taking the necessary action. Out of lack of will, or the fear of losing the respect of people, the leaders don’t take the necessary action, which ultimately causes all the associated people to pay heavily. Therefore, if you wish to be a visionary leader, then you need to do what is necessary.
Don’t Let Go Of Patience:
Initially, no one will follow you, then there will be times when people would doubt your sincerity, and then there will be others who would conspire against you. In all this, the one thing that will keep you going strong and long is patience. Therefore, never ever lose patience, instead, try increasing it.
There Is No Single Style:
The biggest problem with leaders is that they dedicate or commit themselves to a particular leadership style. In doing so they forget that they are leaders of people, and as there is diversity in people, so should be there in the leadership style. Therefore, don’t bound yourself with a single style, rather be volatile and dynamic as the situation demands.
