The world becoming a global village, the businesses achieving success, societies being productive, people living happily is all possible because of the phenomenon of connection. If people stop connecting with others whether it’s on personal or professional level, then life as we know it would cease to exist. Therefore, having a connection and making it stronger is what life is all about.
People who don’t have connection are the ones we see failing in life. People who don’t connect lag behind others in social and professional regards. Therefore, it is imperative that one understands the reason behind the failure to connect, so that it could be resolved and one is able to enjoy a happy and successful life.
To me the biggest reason why people don’t connect is vulnerability. People consider vulnerability as a vice and try to refrain from it; as a result, they do not connect. To me vulnerability actually is a blessing in disguise. The lines below discuss why people hate being vulnerable and why being vulnerable is what pays off.
Vulnerability- The Vice:
People consider vulnerability as a vice because being vulnerable opens the door to facing shame. Thus to avoid shame, people don’t opt for doing things that would make them vulnerable. To better understand this, consider the example of a new MLM professional, the main difference between good and bad MLM professionals is that they don’t feel shame in presenting their ideas to others, those who like the ideas are welcomed to join their network, whereas for others an MLM professional always welcomes criticism. Imagine if an MLM professional stops pitching his or her idea in front of people because of the feeling of vulnerability that people might reject their proposal or they would make fun of it, what do you think would be the future of such an MLM professional. Besides the fact that vulnerability is what differentiates successful MLM from an unsuccessful MLM, it is also the major reason behind people not taking the initiative, what if they get rejected for the job? What if the proposal to a loved one gets turned down? What if people don’t appreciate help? What if you don’t win? All these are questions of vulnerability, which make it a vice; abhorred by all, as a result of which people stop connecting with each other.
Vulnerability- The Blessing:
You’ll think that I am crazy or I don’t have any idea what I am talking about, but no matter how much you deny it, to me vulnerability is a blessing and it is the thing which actually pays off. If you stop being vulnerable, you stop your growth. You don’t feel vulnerable in things which you actually know about, thus being non-vulnerable means you are doing what you do best. As a result of lack of vulnerability you stop exploring the new horizons which you can reach, thus limiting your potential for growth and success. Being vulnerable if seen with the spectacles of optimism brings three main benefits or it exhibits three major traits.
Courage- The first thing that sense of feeling vulnerable brings to a person is courage. If you take a stand for your idea or proposal whilst feeling vulnerable then it shows your courage. Therefore, if you are being vulnerable in front of people then you actually are showing courage of standing in front of them despite all your flaws.
Compassion- Feeling vulnerable makes you compassionate. When you are vulnerable, you treat yourself kindly, and when you see people vulnerable then instead of exploiting you empathize and show kindness to them as well. Therefore, vulnerability brings and nourishes the spirit of kindness in all of us.
Connection – Above all the biggest virtue of vulnerability is connection, which we all yearn for so badly and which is the base of all the joy and progression in life. When asking someone out you take the leap of vulnerability, when presenting a business idea to a client you take the leap of vulnerability, when expressing your love to someone you take the leap of vulnerability. Thus, if vulnerability were not there, then all the people would avoid loving, sharing ideas, caring for each other, which are all the fruits of connection. Thus, more than anything else, vulnerability makes you connect.
Now it’s Your Turn!
