Why It Pays To Be Vulnerable in Your Business

The world becoming a global village, the businesses achieving success, societies being productive, people living happily are all possible because of the phenomenon of connection. If people stop connecting with others whether it’s on a personal or professional level, then life as we know it would cease to exist. Therefore, having a connection and making it stronger is what life is all about.

People who don’t have a connection are the ones we see failing in life. People who don’t connect lag behind others in social and professional regards. Therefore, it is imperative that one understands the reason behind the failure to connect so that it could be resolved and one is able to enjoy a happy and successful life.

To me the biggest reason why people don’t connect is a vulnerability. People consider vulnerability as a vice and try to refrain from it; as a result, they do not connect. To me, vulnerability actually is a blessing in disguise. The lines below discuss why people hate being vulnerable and why being vulnerable is what pays off.

depression

Vulnerability- The Vice:

People consider vulnerability as a vice because being vulnerable opens the door to facing shame. Thus to avoid shame, people don’t opt for doing things that would make them vulnerable. To better understand this, consider the example of a new MLM professional, the main difference between good and bad MLM professionals is that they don’t feel shame in presenting their ideas to others, those who like the ideas are welcomed to join their network, whereas for others an MLM professional always welcomes criticism. Imagine if an MLM professional stops pitching his or her idea in front of people because of the feeling of vulnerability that people might reject their proposal or they would make fun of it, what do you think would be the future of such an MLM professional. Besides the fact that vulnerability is what differentiates successful MLM from an unsuccessful MLM, it is also the major reason behind people not taking the initiative, what if they get rejected for the job? What if the proposal to a loved one gets turned down? What if people don’t appreciate help? What if you don’t win? All these are questions of vulnerability, which make it a vice; abhorred by all, as a result of which people stop connecting with each other.

Vulnerability- The Blessing:

You’ll think that I am crazy or I don’t have any idea what I am talking about, but no matter how much you deny it, to me, vulnerability is a blessing and it is the thing which actually pays off. If you stop being vulnerable, you stop your growth. You don’t feel vulnerable in things which you actually know about, thus being non-vulnerable means you are doing what you do best. As a result of a lack of vulnerability, you stop exploring the new horizons which you can reach, thus limiting your potential for growth and success. Being vulnerable is seen with the spectacles of optimism brings three main benefits or it exhibits three major traits.

Courage- The first thing that a sense of feeling vulnerable brings to a person is courage. If you take a stand for your idea or proposal whilst feeling vulnerable then it shows your courage. Therefore, if you are being vulnerable in front of people then you actually are showing the courage of standing in front of them despite all your flaws.

Compassion- Feeling vulnerable makes you compassionate. When you are vulnerable, you treat yourself kindly, and when you see people vulnerable then instead of exploiting you empathize and show kindness to them as well. Therefore, vulnerability brings and nourishes the spirit of kindness in all of us.

Why It Pays To Be Vulnerable

Connection – Above all the biggest virtue of vulnerability is a connection, which we all yearn for so badly and which is the base of all the joy and progression in life. When asking someone out you take the leap of vulnerability, when presenting a business idea to a client you take the leap of vulnerability, when expressing your love to someone you take the leap of vulnerability. Thus, if the vulnerability were not there, then all the people would avoid loving, sharing ideas, caring for each other, which are all the fruits of connection. Thus, more than anything else, vulnerability makes you connect.

Now it’s Your Turn!

    Nate,

Much of my success flows from being open. I share my failures and successes to make connections easily.

Sometime it happen to me, I feel this little chicken in me that my idea won’t win and I feel ashamed presenting it.
    But that was, not anymore.
The internet has made it a lot easier to relate with one another and brings all together.
    Thanks for sharing Nate.

Hi Nate, I think when we show others how human we are, they can relate to us more. I have found it amazing when I’ve gone through tough times and talked about them – how others have opened up even more! It forms more of a bond with others and can help your relationship with them even in business.

      Hi Lisa,

At the end of the day, our customers and our clients want to know what we can do for them. By building trust sharing your story helps! Thank you for the comments!

    Hi Nate,
I’m just getting into MLM and I’m beginning to understand your points. About 3 weeks ago, I went to a friend’s office to present my network. He called someone who got there and presented a different network with similar products. I felt like I was late but there was something I found which gave me more power – the compensation plan of that other network was weaker.

I think if we fear challenges, we fear growth.

Thanks for the thought provoking content

Ryan a world traveling fool? Lol i would love to be a bigger fool to travel half the places you have traveled!
We are always in our vulnerable state if we request for something- to be frank, this is the time am thinking on this topic 😀

  6. Hi Nate,

Great post. Such wise words you have written. If have found the longer I work online the more I am able to take steps I would never have done a few years ago.

I used to think that people who wrote about their troubles in books and online were just after sympathy but I’ve realized that being courageous enough to tell your story is about helping others and letting them know that you can survive troubling times. What better way to relate to someone than tell them your story?

    Have a great day. Monna

    • Nate Leung says:

That is exactly right Monna! People can relate to you when you share stories.

I have had to embrace more of my vulnerability within the last year. I had started to do so having been told I was unapproachable and then had the universe deliver a very strong message to me when my son passed away in on July 4th. Instant vulnerability. I’ve benefited from seeing how powerful it can be.

  8. Katrina says:

It took me a while. I started out strong and then fell out of touch with being about to connect.
Nate you always present great insight and it is awesome to follow and connect with you on your blog.

    Keep sharing!

That means a lot, thank you Katrina. You’re always more than welcome to come back to my site. 🙂

Honestly I rank vulnerability with nervousness. Now you would wonder how? They told me in school that some nervousness is good for on stage speakers. And being a debater and a speaker I always found it to be true. Such is life, some vulnerability always contributes in making us more aware about things.

  10. Dorothyl says:

Vulnerable and connection…two amazing pro-active words that will steer anyone into success. Using vulnerability as a key to strengthening ones awareness is vital to the fear-of-failure approach. Fear of failure is what most people will attach the thought of being vulnerable to. In actual fact being aware of your fears is what will better prepare you to succeed.
Thank you for the effective and very informative article~

  11. I think you have to take risks in order to succeed and grow your business.

I seem to remember a book my dad got called “Feel the Fear and do it anyway” I really must get it and read it someday!
Thanks for an inspiring post buddy I really enjoyed reading it!

  13. Great post. I think the more vulnerable we are the more we connect with people. It is about bring ourselves, all of ourselves to each engagement. It is about showing up. Allowing people to see who we are and what risks we are willing to take.

    • Nate Leung says:

The more vulnerable we are, the more real we appear to people. Agree with you there!

  14. Toy says:

Excellent post. Vulnerability is critical to courageous action. Many powerful points shared. Again great post!

  15. connection is communication which is key to any relationship. then we must learn to be vulnerable, not judge, not assume. we are all just people and we learn and inspire one another.

  16. Maggie Owens says:

Another great post Nate. My word I picked for myself this year is courage and it goes great with this post. It’s gonna take courage to allow myself to be vulnerable and allow people to see the real me.

    • Nate Leung says:

Like any changes in life, it is a process. Thank you for sharing that Maggie!

  17. Hey Nate,

I never really saw vulnerability until you mentioned how much of a blessing it could be. It definitely an easy way to connect with those that you have a common interest with. Plus it helps to give you reason why you should be courageous on the business you decided to invest in! Great share Nate!

  18. Hi Nate,
I am seeing things from a whole new perspective after reading you here.
I believe you are confusing ‘vulnerability’ with ‘open mindedness’.
While it is good to be receptive and willing to give new people, things a chance, it is very important to keep eyes and ears open and not be led into silly traps.

    • Nate Leung says:

      Hi Ambika,

In today’s message, I’m not confusing ‘vulnerability’ with ‘open mindedness’. I see where you are going with that but being vulnerable in this case, is close to emotional exposure. Open mindedness is expanding your mind for possibilities. These two are not related. Also on the same token, not being vulnerable is holding people back from that it is they are trying get. I agree with you on being more aware of things but I wanted to be clear that the two are not to be confused. 🙂

  19. Do you know at first when i was reading the post i couldn’t connect the meaning with the post. But i was able to understand that been vulnerable in your business can actually make someone compassionate and been compassionate goes a long way. Thanks for the post Nate, You are the best.

  20. Hi Nate … Of course I consider it a blessing and I’m always ready to interact and to stand and fight my corner on issues that I am passionate about. I have been told it is my vulnerability and openess is the main reason people find me engaging.

It’s much easier to do it on the internet and for me now the internet is really the only way I interact. xxx

  21. Esha says:

Nate, I loved your views on this, however, I have seen a lot of people who act vulnerable in order to reap benefits.

    • Nate Leung says:

I’ve seen that happen too as well. In this case, we use vulnerability for the greater good. 🙂
