What Should You Do When Your MLM Upline Quits?

One of the most confusing times of any MLM network marketer is when there up line support (very often the very person who brought them into this MLM network marketing opportunity in the first place) decides to quit and leave to greener pastures.

Very often new MLM Network marketers and business people start to feel a sense of pressure, frustration, anxiety, and overwhelm that was never there before – simply because their safety net has been removed. Now responsible for their own success, they begin to wonder about how they’re going to be able to make ends meet (and you can completely forget about becoming a financial success) simply because they are unsure of how to move forward.

What Should You Do When Your MLM Upline Quits

Luckily, this is not the issue that most people assume it to be, and the thought of the entire process is almost always tremendously more overwhelming than any actual situation is in reality. Here are a couple of specific strategies to help you navigate the situation when this starts to happen to you, helping you to come out on top better than ever before.

Simplify everything in Your MLM Business

While you’re not going to want to overload or overwhelm yourself at any point in time when becoming an MLM Network Marketer, the truth of the matter is that when you start to reach out and take on a tremendous amount of responsibility (responsibility that you simply did have before) things can get a little bit crazy. You’re going to feel like now that your downline support is gone you need to take the reins, which may or may not be true.

But even if this is true, simplifying the process and really distilling down the most important details – and only paying attention to them, at least at first – is going to get you through this transitional period.

Create an effective action plan

Notice that I said and effective action plan, and not just any old plan.

Too many people start to get bogged down in the process of trying to work out their own plans, planning for plans and then planning how to plan the next plan. If you feel a little bit confused at that last sentence, imagine what life would be like if that’s how you were operating on a regular basis – a situation that they could find yourself in when dealing with the lack of up line support.

No, you’ll want to focus entirely on what the next step is – and only what the next step is – and then move forward a single step at a time until you are able to accomplish everything that you had originally set out to. This is the easiest way to build real success in the MLM world anyways, but it just so happens to be the most powerful way to navigate when your up line support has disappeared.

No matter what, always push forward and try to generate a positive moment

If you take nothing else away from this article except for this point, you’ll have got a tremendous amount of value. Whatever you do when your up line decides to disappear or quit you need to keep your momentum rolling forward, doing everything and anything you can to avoid sliding back, coasting or declining in any way whatsoever.

  1. Hey, a new commenting system 😉 I dig it Nate!

When your mentor takes off focus on 2 things; creating content through blogging and making friends through blog commenting and tribing it up.

Do these 2 things to avoid the mental clutter and anxiety experienced by most leader-less MLMers.

    Thanks for sharing Nate!

Awesome post Nate! It is ultimately up to you, not your mentor if you want success 🙂

  3. Hi Nate,

No matter what…we do have to have our own strong presence on line. If your “upline” quits, no worries. To avoid all that mental stress, I firmly believe we need to have our own blog, and a strong following on social media.

I think Ryan says it all in his comment!

      Hi Donna,

I agree with you on having a blog. Times have changed. We can only rely so much on offline strategies and now social media is the new means of “networking” and “word of mouth”. Thanks for stopping by!

    Good post Nate.

No one should be overly reliant on their upline, and if they quit, perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise.

Create a load of content, make friends on social media and offer value.

Nate, It is amazing how much someone’s world can be rocked if their upline or sponsor quits. It is almost as if they have had the rug pulled out from under them. I like your advice – “you’ll want to focus entirely on what the next step is and then move forward a single step at a time”

Great advice Nate and I could have used this myself back when this happened to me time and time again.

I admit being very insecure and really not knowing what I was doing so not knowing who to turn to I would eventually quit too. Not a good plan, I admit.

The last one I was in my upline quit once again but I soon learned that obviously this isn’t the right place for me so I moved on. I think that’s something important to recognize as well.

    Great advice though!

      Hi Adrienne,

Glad to have you here! I agree with you if it doesn’t makes sense or resonate with you, why force yourself to be in that company. Alot of success has to come from you, yes. At the same time, you have to promote a product or opportunity that you believe in. If you don’t believe in it, then it’s just a waste of time. In the end, it’s really about what makes you happy. Thanks for stopping by Adrienne!

We shouldnt panic when our upline quits, that’s for sure. You just need to extend your range of online contacts more and find other people willing to interact with you.

    • Nate Leung says:

Exactly and take matters into your own hands. Ultimately, we’re all responsible for our success, not our upline. Thanks Luke!

Hello Nate, I was told by my sponsor that if I invested in helping others by “paying it forward ” that he would build the team under my sponsorship. I have spent over 7k and he has used it to build other teams have nothing to do with my direct team. I do not know who to go to within the organization for help. The company is a new company and has both a great product and fabulous comp plan. I really want to build my business but want justice for his misleading, deceitful behavior.
