How to Make Stress Your Best Friend

One of the greatest evils that people of today have to battle with either regularly or occasionally is stress. In every walk of life, because of the pressure of all sorts, people usually stress out and this stress derails all their progress and health. Thus, stress is by far the biggest menace faced by civilizations across the globe.

We consider the ill effects of stress as inevitable or at least this is what most of our doctors and psychologists tell us. Although what they tell us is right it is not definite. There are several types of research going on the effects of stress and the way it can be combated. A few researches have also passed through my eyes, which made me change my belief regarding stress, and now I consider it one of my best friends.

You can turn stress from a monstrous enemy into an ally and trusted friend just by changing the way you think about it. If you train your mind in a way or feed it with such information that makes it believe that stress is helpful, then it would change the response of the body against stress and make the body healthier and stronger. In the lines below I will give you two major examples that can help you change your mind about stress which will eventually make stress your best friend.

How to Make Stress Your Best Friend

Stress Symptoms:

The stress symptoms are the most hated symptoms, the major culprit of which is the heart pumping at a higher rate. The general notion is that when your heart starts pumping under stressful situations it means that the heart is under too much pressure and it has become difficult for it to supply blood to the body.

However, if the same condition is to be viewed from a positive mindset, then you will come to know that this fast pumping of heart actually makes the heart strong and increases the supply of oxygen to the brain that then enables it to think in a better way. Thus, if you know that stress is going to help your heart and brain, then you won’t feel the pressure and gloominess of stress that is usually associated with it. Hence, instead of resisting stress and falling prey to its ills, the body will actually appreciate the symptoms which will automatically increase the resilience of the body against the stress. Therefore, the next time you experience stress symptoms, think of it as a healthy symptom and your body would respond to it in a healthy way.

Oxytocin:

Have you ever been in a situation where you are under stress and want someone to support you? Or when under stress you wanted people around you who could share your pain and show you some care? This is because of the oxytocin neuro-hormone and is released by the brain as a response to stress. This hormone is generally known as the ‘cuddling hormone’, thus the feeling of physical contact and social connection that you experience when under stress is because of this hormone. Besides that, this hormone also helps the body where it serves as an anti-inflammatory agent in addition to causing the cells of the heart to rejuvenate which had gone dead because of stress. Moreover, the production of this hormone increases rapidly as soon as you interact socially with people especially by helping them out in their problems.

Therefore, in other words, feeling stressed helps you become more social, more caring towards other people and betters the health of the brain. Thus, the next time you are in stress, remember that your body is producing a substance that can help you become better, and this feeling of becoming better will serve as a healthy response to stress.

How to Make Stress Your Best Friend

Thus, both Oxytocin and the stress symptoms are what make stress your best friend and can help you turn this malignant enemy into your best friend.

Nice one Nate, I think stress can keep you going when you are tired or otherwise not included to continue on. Sometimes stress helps us to do more with the energy stress products in us. It’s not all bad!

  2. Hi Nate,

This is a different viewpoint of stress that I have never heard of. I’m not so sure it would work for me. When I am under a lot of stress, an anxiety attack usually follows. Not much benefit to that for me.

But you have given us something to think about.

  3. There are always two sides and I have enjoyed reading your post about how you can look at the positives of stress. Like most others, I know what stress is like and I do think we get to the point when we just take on a certain level of stress into our every day lives and accept it as normal so perhaps we then only really see it when more extreme. A few months ago I suffered burnout, I was in tears, didn’t know what was wrong with me, felt exhausted etc all symptoms of extreme stress and when I realised what it all meant I stepped back and the stress became a gift to me as it gave me permission to step back, to take time out and to explore, put me first and get batter.

  4. Very informative article, Nate–especially about the production of oxytocin, which I did not know about. I do agree we should take greater notice of our internal reactions to events and channel them in a more productive manner.

Depends on the kind of stress. Being an Italian mother I could and probably will, stress to the end of my time here on planet earth over my children. I tend to do a lot of worrying, coffee drinking and smoking during those times. If it’s just every day stress or work related stress, I’m at my finest. That kind of stress is like a mega boost of energy from the Universe for me and I really get things done! 🙂

    Happy New Year!

Stress is a powerful thing. It can motivate or paralyze. It’s up to you how you choose to use it.

    Hi Nate,

We can face, embrace and release stress in any moment. Meditate frequently to become skilled at embracing instead of resisting stress. Now I feel relaxed, and at peace. All because I meditated today 😉

    Good tips buddy….Happy New Year!

  8. Interesting! I have never thought of stress as an ally before. Funny you should mention about Oxytocin as a “cuddling hormone”. Now that I think about that, I have said on stressful occasions, “I need a hug.” Ha! Who knew! Thanks, Nate, for this information. I’ll think differently about stress from now on. Peace!

  9. Maggie Owens says:

Stress and I go way back. I normally withdraw when I am under stress. I don’t want to be near anyone or talk to anyone.

I have started to go out walking or taking drives now when I am feeling stressful. Maybe I should add hugs to that list.

Thanks for this great info. I am working on this year being much less stressful.

Let’s make it the year of “Feeling Alive”! Thanks for the comments!

  10. I don’t know if I agree or disagree with this. Me when I fee stress I don’t want to be around people I want to be left alone till I get over it. I never allow myself to linger/wallow in it for a long time though. My bf likes to be cuddled and hugged when he is feeling stressed. So i guess it varies from one person to another. Be good if everyone could see stress as a healthy thing, that way they would be able to get past it and not get stuck and become depressed…

  11. Greg Mock says:

Wow. I never knew that. Pretty interesting stuff. I used to want to drink alcohol when I was stressed.

  12. frank joseph says:

Personally when am stressed, i usually like to be left alone and within hours/days i will get over it and be done with.
But this might not be the case for other people. They would love to be among their love ones.

  13. Hey Nate,

Whoa, that was some serious stuff straight out of biology class! But I like the concept of looking at stress signals from a positive point of view!

Yeah, I’ve heard a bit about oxytocin. That oxytocin is involved in breast feeding and it makes a mother ‘bond’ better with the infant. I read it somewhere.

So, oxytocin is also involved in this case? Okay, that’s brand new info!

If I could make stress my best ally, that’d be great! Surely, I’ll try to look at it from a positive point of view.

Thanks for sharing this post Nate 🙂

What is stress? And how does one deal with it? I think all these questions are one this post has dealt with it.

    Thanks Nate for the insight.

  15. Esha says:

What a novel way of looking at it..loved your perspective.

  16. Charmie says:

Yes, to sustain dynamic changes in this era you need to have something called stress management else you can out-burst at any point of time.

Personally speaking, when I am stressed out I talk with my special ones and its like gone in 60 sec.

  17. Laurel Regan says:

This is a great way to reframe the whole idea of stress – thank you for the insight! Much appreciated.

  18. amanda says:

Great post here – I do think attitude has a big effect and how we react impacts our day to day more than we think.

    • Nate Leung says:

In fact it has a lot to do with our we think. Thank you for the comments Amanda!

  19. I agree 100% Nate. Stress is a friend. It’s our perspective about stress that matters and it’s how we choose to respond that matters.
