3 Reasons Why You Should not Babysit your Downline

When it comes to MLM Network Marketing building your group is one of the most vital components to your business. Your downline is basically the people that are actively working the business, usually as distributors. In the beginning it is very important to be there for your people, as they will have questions and problems that you can help them solve. However, after a certain point you have to cut the apron strings and allow the people in your downline to work on their own.  Here are three reasons that you should not babysit your downline if you want your MLM business to grow effectively:

In the beginning it is crucial that you are there to mentor and train all of your distributors. However, you can quickly fall into the trap of answering every question they have and doing things for them that they could do for themselves. You are obviously responsible for properly training your team, but once they have a good understanding of the company or products then it is time to let them grow on their own. If you are spending all of your time assisting your downline then you won’t have time for the more important aspects of your business. If you have a distributor that is taking an inordinate amount of your time, then you need to have a discussion with them or even consider letting them go. Remember, time is money, particularly when you work from home.

 

2. They will not grow into leaders

 

At some point you have to let the birds out of the nest if they are going to fly. Ultimately you would like your distributors to grow into leaders that are recruiting other people and growing your business. If you are constantly holding their hand along the way or doing things that they could do for themselves, then you are simply stunting their growth and the growth of your business. Once you have given them the tools and training to succeed then it is time for your distributors to become leaders.

One of the most important parts of an MLM business is growing it through recruitment. If you are spending too much time dealing with every question your distributors have then you will not be out there recruiting new members. You might find that your business is suddenly stuck in the mud and that your growth is not what it should be. A big reason that MLMs grow stagnate is that the leader is not spending their time effectively. If you want your business to grow then you need to use your time efficiently.

 

These are just three reasons that you should not waste too much time babysitting your downline. If you find that you are spending too much time dealing with distributors then it is probably time to reassess your training methods or even consider getting new distributors. The only way to effectively grow your MLM business is by having a downline that is capable and willing to take leadership roles.

      Hey Nate!

      The people that care the most tend to over baby sit their downlines. I believe we can look at it a different way.

      We have to treat our downlines like babies when they learn how to walk. Initially, we may support them and let them walk. At the end of the day, we want to be standing at a distance, watching them and spurring them on to move towards you.

      That is true leadership. Being at a distance just enough for your downlines to see you, and not too far away. This is so they know where to move next to, while you give them moral support.

      I personally feel that downlines should be trained to think. Call me what you will, but I believe that they should first take the initiative to find the answers, and not ask you every single question every time they face a challenge.

      A lot of videos how there can help give you the answers you seek. Only when you are unable to still get any answers, should you approach your leaders for them.

      Another reason for not babysitting your downline is so that they do not RELY on your to RECRUIT for them. A lot of network marketers make their mistake, and end up being the parent of everyone.

      This creates less time freedom as they begin to earn more income. Definitely not what we want.

      I would agree not to babysit your downline for too long because we want them to be independent and able to duplicate effort rather than too dependent.

      This is such an awesome point to advise our new recruit so that they will also want to be independent as quickly as possible and also they will want to do the same to their people. Great advise, Nate :)

      Great article. Clearly, it is important to be able to train new enrollees in a fashion that makes them more independent rather than allowing them to become like 3 year olds that need their hand held all the time. I like to answer questions with directions to the answer, rather than just giving the answer. As with my children, I find that they learn better that way, and retain it longer because they actually had to work for the answer.

      I think you mentioned the key points in these reasons and that’s also where most people go wrong. I guess a little bit of guidance is all that’s needed and of course, be there to help them if need be. Other than that if you spoonfeed them too much, you waste your time and they will never really learn how to find their way.

      Hey Nate,

      This is a very important topic! This is the mistake I’ve done and as a result I recruited less and the members of my team didn’t grow. As a leader you want to spend enough time effectively to keep moving forward.

      It’s one thing to training at the beginning because most distributors are at a lost when they first get involved. But when they are educated enough to go off on their own, then you have to let them so the you can keep moving forward yourself.
